The Critical Computational Social Science (C2S2) Lab

The Critical Computational Social Science (C2S2) Lab studies political communication, polarization, and misinformation using computational and mixed methods, guided by critical and social science theory. The lab examines how political information and AI-generated imagery circulate on social media and shape public understanding, and develops open computational tools — including topic modeling and visual analysis packages — to support this kind of research more broadly.

C2S2 is directed by Ayse D. Lokmanoglu, Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Studies at Boston University’s College of Communication.

Computational Research on Societal Issues (CRSI)

The Computational Research on Societal Issues (CRSI) Lab examines public opinion on societal issues using computational approaches and guided by social science theories. Research areas include examining public opinion and opinion dynamics, detecting predictors of public opinion, and finding communication strategies to promote pro-social public opinion.

Be You Kids Media Lab

The Be You Kids Media Lab explores ways to use and design media to promote positive outcomes among youth and their families. The lab uses mixed-methods and community-engaged approaches to explore what young people and their families want and need in their digital experiences and environments. They then work to translate their findings into industry reports and real-world recommendations.

Story Technology and Audience Response (STAR)

The Story Technology and Audience Response (STAR) lab conducts research that examines the cognitive and affective mechanisms underlying audiences’ use, engagement, and response to traditional and emerging narratives and entertainment. They are interested in the reciprocal connections between what content people watch, read, listen to, and play with and their influence on everyday life.
