To reserve time on the v400 and m500 NMR instruments, please click here NMR Reservation Calendar

Your login is your email username you used to signup for the chem-nmrusers-list. The password is cicnmr06 (for example, if you signed up for the list using ralifo@bu.edu, your log in is ralifo and password is cicnmr06).

Before You Begin: Connect to the BU Network

You must be connected to the BU Network, this can be via the wired network, the wireless network, or remotely via the BU VPN. You must be connected to the network to access the reservation calendar.

Reservation Policies:

Users must follow these rules when reserving time on a spectrometer:

  1. NMR reservations will be monitored by Paul Ralifo weekly at the end of each business week (Fridays).
  2. To simplify tracking on NMR reservations, users are required to include their Lab Name in the “Your Name and Lab Name” field of the Add New Event pop up window of the Calendar.
  3. Any user that needs extra time than is allowed on any spectrometer (DayQ or NightQ) must contact Paul Ralifo first to get approval.
  4. Reservation rules for each NMR are further explained below.

Policy for reservation offenders:

  1. First time offenders will get an email warning. CIC Instrument committee chair will be copied on the email.
  2. Second time offenders will have their NMR privileges revoked for one week. User’s PI and Chemistry’s Director of Operations will also be notified.
  3. Third time offenders and thereafter will have their NMR privileges revoked for one month. User’s PI, Chemistry’s Director of Operations, and Department Chair will also be notified.

6:00pm-8:00pm 1 hour max
8:00pm-8:00am Overnight
Sat-Sun: 8:00am-7:00pm 30 mins max

SIGN-UP RULES

  1. Overnight Reservation rules will reset on each Monday and reservations can be made up to 7 days in advance. Overnight reservations are made by rotating through each lab group- any one particular group cannot book more than one overnight per machine (SHARE!). If the Overnight time is still unreserved, by 5pm on that day, the time can be reserved by any authorized user, even if he/she has already used Overnight time that week.
  2. Maximum time slots for each of the NMRs at particular times are listed above. Each research group can only reserve a maximum of two consecutive non-overnight time slots per spectrometer. For example, a user can only reserve the 400 NMR on weekdays for a maximum of 30 mins between 8am and 6pm and the same group can make two consecutive reservations to a maximum of 60 mins for this instrument. CONSECUTIVE TIME SLOTS CANNOT BE RESERVED BY THE SAME PERSON!
  3. Every user must reserve time on the 400 MHz NMR before using the instrument. Any user that is caught using the 400 without reserving time may have their experiments aborted by users who have reserved the time on the Calendar.
  4. Reserved time that is not needed should be canceled ASAP. If you cannot make your reserved time slot less than an hour in advance please email the chem-nmrusers-list@bu.edu and let people know that the time slot is available for use.
  5. Parallel booking of more than one spectrometer is strictly prohibited.
  6. Users who run experiments during time booked by someone else without that person’s permission or, who reserve instruments under another user’s name to sidestep the rules will be banned from using the NMRs.
  7. Users who run experiments during time booked by someone else without that person’s permission or, who reserve instruments under another user’s name to sidestep the rules will be banned from using the NMRs.

SIGN-UP RULES:

  1. Overnight (O/N) Reservation rules will reset on each Monday morning and reservations can be made up to 7 days in advance. O/N reservations are made by rotating through each research group; each research group can only reserve one O/N per week except the following:
    • If on that day (from Monday to Friday) the nightQ is not reserved by 5 PM, then that NightQ slot is up for grabs. On Saturdays and Sundays, the NightQ is up for grabs at 4:00 and 12:00 PM respectively if still unreserved.
    • If there is remaining NightQ time available (after the Primary NightQ User’s reservation) by 5PM. The primary nightQ user is the first user to reserve nightQ time for that day.
    • Prior approval from Paul Ralifo.
  2. When reserving the NightQ, only reserve the time you need and not the whole nightQ slot, i.e. if you will only be using 3 hours to run a 13C NMR, you should only reserve from 9:00 PM – 12:00 AM (and not 9:00 PM – 9:00 AM). This will allow other users the chance to make use of the remaining nightQ.
  3. Remaining NightQ time can be reserved at 5:00 PM (or 4:00 PM on Saturdays and 12:00 PM on Sundays). You must reserve time on the Calendar to use the nightQ.
  4. Overnight Reservations for the week start on Monday at 9:00 AM.
  5. NightQ samples cannot be queued before 5 PM.
  6. For dayQ, users are asked to limit the amount of time (for all samples queued in a row) to less than 30 minutes. For example, if you need to run 4 x 15 mins Carbon experiments, do not queue all 4 samples at once but break them up to allow others to be able to run samples in a decent amount of time.
