Other Instrumentation

Other instrumentation in the CIC includes AA, CD, DSC, Fluorescence, FT-IR, HPLC, Microscale Thermophoresis, Polarimetry, and UV-Vis. These instruments are available to BU community after training and to non-BU community users on a fee-for-service basis. Our rates are competitive and please contact us for details.

Additional information is available as a PDF Brochure.

The Applied Photophysics CS/2 Chirascan is a state-of-the-art circular dichroism (CD) spectrometer with micro-titrator, Peltier temperature controller, fluorescence capability and stop-flow attachment. Please cite NSF MRI grant number CHE-112654 when publishing CD results.

The Varian Cary 100 Bio UV-Vis spectrophotometer is an instrument for routine UV-Vis analysis. It has quartz overcoating, sealed optics, variable slits and large sample compartment. The software is Cary WinUV which features a modular design.

The Mettler Toledo Polymer DSC R differential scanning calorimeter is a research grade DSC with a 34-sample position sample robot for high sample throughput. A temperature range from 30C to 700C is available in a single measurement and it is suited for microgram or inhomogeneous samples.

The Horiba Jobin Yvon FluoroMax 3 Fluorimeter spectrofluorometer is a research grade bench-top system featuring 2500:1 water Raman signal to noise ratio and 200 nm/sec fast scanning capability. Components include Xenon Arc Lamp, excitation and emission monochromator, emission and reference detector and sample compartment.

The HP (now Agilent) 1090 HPLC with fluorescence system is equipped with a 2mL 100-sample autosampler, a three solvent system and a heated oven compartment. UV-Vis and/or fluorescence detectors are available for peak detection. Software is ChemStation. Please contact CIC if you would like to reserve time.

The NanoTemper Microscale Thermophoresis instrument is a versatile tool for the measurement of binding affinities, measuring the fluorescence and mobility response upon binding of a fluorescently labeled species to a protein or ligand. Please cite NIH grant number 1S10OD021690-01A1 when publishing MST results.

The Nicolet FT-IR with ATR is a high end optical bench top system with 0.09cm-1 resolution and continuous dynamic alignment. This unit allows AutoTune and automated continuously variable aperture adjustment. A horizontal attenuated total reflectance (HATR) accessory is also available.

The Rudolph Autopol II Polarimeter is a dual wavelength (989/546nm) that automatically measures and digitally displays the magnitude and sign of angles through which optically active substances rotate linearly polarized light. Controls are located on the touch screen. We have several configuration of sample cells available. Please contact us.

The Varian AA240Z Atomic Absoption Spectrometer features dedicated furnace with Zeeman background correction which enhances graphite furnace system performance over the full wavelength range. The Constant Temperature Zone furnace design allows analysis at ppb levels with Varian’s high intensity UltrAA lamps.
