Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey (9-15-3, 7-9-2 HEA) will head to Burlington, Vermont, on Thursday, Feb. 5, for a rematch with the University of Vermont Catamounts (12-14-4, 6-9-3 HEA). It’ll be the third meeting between the Hockey East rivals in just two weeks.
This trip north marks BU’s first visit to Gutterson Fieldhouse this season after the last series at Walter Brown Arena.
BU has historically dominated Vermont—leading the all-time series 45-14-8—but the Catamounts have had the upper hand this year. On Jan. 23 and 24, Vermont swept BU by scores of 5-2 and 2-1. It was UVM’s first back-to-back win against BU since Jan. 25, 2014, and the first time ever at Walter Brown.
Assistant coach Megan Myers said the sweep served as a wake-up call for the Terriers, who responded with a strong weekend against Merrimack, winning 3-0 and 3-1.
“Playing those games against UVM set us up for a good weekend,” Myers said. “We did a lot of deep-dive work before Merrimack. We’re excited to put it to work tomorrow.”
Senior forward Sydney Healey was the standout performer, scoring twice in the second Merrimack game. Healey leads BU with 15 goals and 24 points—both career highs—and scored the lone goal in the 2-1 loss to Vermont on Jan. 24.
“Since getting to BU, Syd’s been an unreal hockey player,” Myers said. “She’s ready to go every shift. It’s really cool that she’s peaking now.”
Senior forward Clara Yuhn added two points against Merrimack—an empty-netter in Game 1 and an assist in Game 2. Yuhn sits second on the team with seven goals and 16 points.
The Terriers will be without senior forwards Lilli and Luisa Welcke, who are representing Germany at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics.
Goaltending was a strong point in the sweep. Graduate student Michelle Pasiechnyk earned her first shutout of the season in North Andover, stopping all 23 shots she faced. Junior goalie Mari Pietersen made 27 saves and allowed just one goal in the home game.
Vermont enters the rematch after back-to-back losses to Providence College (4-1 and 3-2 on Jan. 30–31). The Catamounts’ power play, which scored four times in six chances against BU, cooled off versus the Friars, converting just once on ten opportunities.
Junior forward Stella Retrum stayed hot, extending her point streak to five games with a goal and an assist. Retrum leads UVM in goals (11) and points (21). Junior forward Kaylee Lewis ranks second on the team with eight goals and 17 points, while sophomore defender Josie Hemp scored in both Providence games.
Goaltenders struggled for Vermont last weekend. Freshman Zoe Cliche gave up four goals on Jan. 30, while junior Ellie Simmons allowed three in the second game. Cliche, however, was dominant against BU earlier this season, allowing just three goals on 63 shots in Vermont’s sweep.
Unless they meet in the Hockey East tournament, Thursday’s matchup will be the final meeting between BU and Vermont this season. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
