It was a no-games-allowed afternoon in North Andover on Friday as Boston University Women’s Hockey (8-15-3, 6-9-2 HE) shut out Merrimack College (5-19-3, 2-14-1 HE) 3-0 at Lawler Rink.

A pair of first-period goals allowed the Terriers to take an early chokehold on the game, and the score remained the same until a late empty-netter sealed the BU victory.

“I thought we did a really good job, just getting a gutsy road win,” BU Assistant Coach Megan Quinn said. “I thought the team did a good job.”

The first of the Terriers’ two goals in the opening frame came halfway through when defenders Anežka Čabelová and Lucy Thiessen connected and the latter found forward Lola Reid. Reid picked up the puck after a blocked shot and fired it through traffic to beat Merrimack goaltender Lauren Lyons for a 1-0 lead.

“She has a great shot, she’s a great kid on the bench,” Quinn said of Reid. “I think she has a great opportunity to step into a bigger role.”

The Terriers took a major penalty a few minutes later, but what should have been an opportunity for Merrimack to get back in the game turned into the opposite. Forward Greta Henderson intercepted a pass and took the puck by herself, breaking away and beating Lyons to double BU’s lead. The shorthanded tally was one of the Terriers’ five this season, among the top marks in the nation.

“It set the tone for the rest of the game,” Quinn said of BU’s penalty kill. “It was nice to see the team bounce back.”

The middle frame was a quiet one, with the teams combining for only 13 shots that each netminder stopped with little trouble.

Merrimack upped its offensive pressure in the third, pulling its goalie with a minute and a half remaining. However, BU forward Avery Supryka got the puck to forward Clara Yuhn, who sent a long shot into the empty net to seal the 3-0 win for the Terriers.

Graduate student goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk stopped all 23 shots she faced, recording her first shutout of the season.

“[Michelle] just brings some calmness,” Quinn said. “You know what you’re going to get with her.”

BU added to its lopsided all-time series against Merrimack, improving to 21-4-6 overall.

The Terriers will finish the home-and-home series against the Warriors on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena. The game will stream on ESPN+ and NESN.
