After solidifying their spot in the Beanpot Tournament championship with an overtime win, Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey (7-11-3, 5-6-2 HE) is set to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders (15-7-1, 7-6-1 HE) in more Hockey East play before the championship game.
Senior captain defender Maeve Carey gave the Terriers a 2-1 win over the Huskies, defeating the three-time reigning champs and stretching the team’s win streak to three games. Starting off the scoring was freshman forward Lexie Bertelsen in the fifth minute of the first, recording her second career goal for the Terriers.
Goaltender Mari Pietersen stood tall in the net, making 25 saves and bringing her save percentage to .932. Pietersen is likely to be between the pipes on Saturday.
This will be the Terriers’ 21st matchup against Holy Cross, with the last four ending with the Crusaders unable to score. Pietersen handed out three of those shutouts and will look to add another.
The Terriers boast a 14-6 all-time record with an even 7-2 home and 7-3 away split, with one loss coming at Fenway Park.
Holy Cross is coming off a 3-1 conference win against Boston College. Assistant captain forward Alexia Moreau recorded her eighth goal, bringing her to 15 points this season, followed by freshman forward Naemi Herzig, who recorded two assists, and freshman forward Violet Carroll, who added a point against BC last week. Together, they have combined for 38 points and will be a challenge for BU defenders.
Goaltender Brooke Loranger played last week, making 29 saves to bring her save percentage to .935. Having played in only seven games, it is likely that goalie Abby Hornung will get the nod in net against BU; Hornung has appeared in 16 games this season, making 379 saves with a .940 save percentage.
Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Walter Brown Arena. Streaming will be available on ESPN+.
