Hockey East began with a win.
Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey (1-5-0, 1-0-0 HE) defeated the University of New Hampshire Wildcats (3-4-1, 0-1-0) 4-2 Friday night.
“I thought we did a great job. I think we responded really well to getting scored on,” BU defender Maeve Carey said. “And even when we scored, we kind of kept at that neutral level, rather than getting too high or too low, which really showed in our game.”
The Terriers had a fiery start, drilling attempts at UNH goalie Sedona Blair.
BU could not break through, failing to capitalize on their set-ups.
The Terriers did not back down. Eighteen minutes into the frame, Forward Kaileigh Quigg gained possession of the puck and jammed it through Blair’s defense, bringing the score to 1-0.
BU’s lead did not hold for long. Less than a minute after the Terrier’s goal, Wildcat forward Kristen Hartman got between the pipes, tying the score.
Defender Lucy Thiessen led BU with five shots, with forward Sydney Healey following close with three attempts throughout the first.
Coach Megan Myers higlihted Lucy’s emergence as a key contributor for the team.
“She looks like she wants to perform for this team and be a huge part of it,” Myers said.
BU kept possession for most of the period, winning eight of thirteen faceoffs.
Both teams looked to break the tie in the second, exchanging shots on the net.
Fourteen minutes into the period, BU goalie Michelle Pasiechnyk stood lone as forward Alyson Hush drilled the puck past the line, bringing the score to 2-1.
40 seconds later, Thiessen got her first goal of the season, tying up the score again for the Terriers with an assist from forward Lexie Bertelsen.
The middle frame ended with the Terriers holding a 12- 8 lead on shots on goal.
Just four minutes into the final frame, BU regained its lead in the third with Healey firing the puck into the net with an assist from forward Luisa Welcke.
After the goal, Lilli Welcke and Healey exchanged attempts, hoping to secure the Terriers’ lead.
UNH made several cracks at the puck as well. Pasiechnyk stood tall, preventing the Wildcats from capitalizing.
UNH abandoned the net with two minutes left. From across the ice, Healey sent the puck down straight into the net, ending the frame with a 4-2 for the Terriers with 26 seconds remaining on the clock.
The face-off ended with a total of 69 shots on the goal, 29 of them from the Wildcats.
Looking ahead, Maeve Carey states the importance of keeping that same level of game effort going forward.
“If we just continue to do that, and continue to push the pace in practice and keep working hard and just keep playing BU hockey, it’s going to come every weekend,” Speaker 3 said.
The Terriers wore pink throughout the matchup in support of the Ellie Fund for Breast Cancer.
BU will be back on the ice at Walter Brown on Halloween with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m.. Streaming is available on ESPN+.
