For the first time since Nov. 2014, Boston University Men’s Hockey (2-0-0) hosted the Colgate University Raiders (0-1-0), beating them 6-2.
“I liked our game really from start to finish. I thought we came out — we were moving the puck, we were skating, we were managing the puck very well,” BU Head Coach Jay Pandolfo said.
In the 12th minute, chances nearly clicked for BU. Sophomore defenseman Sascha Boumedienne attempted to backhand the puck off a pass from junior forward Jack Harvey. The puck was saved and then let loose, allowing Harvey to find sophomore forward Kamil Bednarik, but the duo could not find the goal.
The Raiders also put up quality chances in response, but sophomore goaltender Mikhail Yegorov stood tall, making saves on shots from Colgate’s sophomore defenseman Isaiah Norlin and Niko Rexine in the 18th and 19th minutes of the first period.
The Terriers finally broke through in the final minute of the first period courtesy of sophomore defenseman Cole Hutson, who spun around a defenseman, skating unmarked into the crease. Hutson stuffed the puck home, making the score 1-0 for BU.
The Terriers began the second period attacking the Raiders’ backline with relentless offense. BU junior forward Mick Frechette scored his first collegiate goal in the top of the second period, tucking the puck into the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-0.
Frechette, who is from the Boston area, has been coming to games at Agganis Arena since he was a kid.
“It was a great feeling to [score] it here in front of friends and family, and obviously, our home crowd,” Frechette said.
A minute later, freshman forward Ryder Ritchie drove toward the net, connecting off a pass from senior forward Owen McLaughlin to also score his first collegiate goal.
Nine minutes into the second period, the Terriers had their first power play of the night. Sophomore forward Cole Eiserman continued his scoring streak and accuracy on his one-timers, burying a shot into the goal, increasing BU’s lead to 4-0.
Colgate found their first tally of the night shortly after when freshman forward Tyson Doucette redirected the puck from senior forward Simon Labelle on the back post, bringing the score to 4-1.
The final frame was full of penalties. The Terriers were called four of them, and Colgate two. Both teams would capitalize on special teams.
Eiserman scored again for BU on the power play at the top of the third period. The Raiders did not lose momentum, also making a goal on a power play, coming from Norlin, making the score to 5-2 in favor of the Terriers.
Freshman forward Jonathan Morello wrapped up the period, potting an empty-netter while shorthanded, ending the game with a 6-2 score.
The Terriers will continue their series against Colgate on Oct. 11, with puck drop scheduled at 6 p.m., with streaming available on ESPN+.
