Women’s Lacrosse: BU Extends Losing Streak to Three Following Senior Day Loss
By Kasie Costalas
The Boston University Women’s Lacrosse team (7-6, 2-4 PL) fell to No. 15/16 Loyola Maryland (10-5, 6-0 PL), 20-14, during their Senior Day game at Nickerson Field on Saturday.
Junior Jayne Feeney started off the Terriers’ offensive effort by scoring the first goal of the game. 31 seconds later, Georgia Latch answered for the Greyhounds to tie the game and kick off a six-goal run.
With only 13 seconds left in the first quarter, Elle Stevenson managed to break the Terriers’ scoring drought by netting her first of five goals on a free-position shot.
BU’s defense gained momentum in the second quarter and limited Loyola to 4 goals. However, the Terriers’ offense was only able to put one on the board, as Stevenson completed an assist to senior Hannah Tillier.
“In the first half, we didn’t have a ton of possessions and we hit two pipes off a couple good looks,” said BU head coach, Lauren Morton.
Despite starting the second half down 11-3, BU fought hard in the third quarter and put seven in the back of the net. The Terriers were able to capitalize on three 8-meter fouls, with midfielder Kendall Sims scoring two of the free-position goals.
The scoring campaign would not be enough for BU, though, as Loyola tallied five of their own during the quarter. Greyhounds’ senior, Chase Boyle, was responsible for four of the goals and ended the game with seven total.
Boyle proved to be a multifaceted threat. In addition to leading the game in both points and goals, she collected an astounding 22 possessions on the circle, just two shy of the NCAA record for most draw controls in a single game.
Boyle’s control over the draw was one of BU’s largest obstacles as they went 4 on 37 for the day. Winning those possessions is vital for scoring, as proved by midfielder Nia Carrera.
The freshman collected all but one of the Terriers’ draw controls. Her first possession resulted in a free-position shot and goal for Tillier just 10 seconds later. On the next play, they nearly recreated the goal, but Loyola’s Kennedy Buntrock came up with a save.
In addition to the possessions, Carrera was able to shut down Latch, the Greyhounds’ season leader in points, for the second half, allowing the Terriers’ defense to play more aggressively.
“I was really impressed just with how she stepped up to the plate and really was able to help limit Georgia [Latch], but also just be able to kind of help us in any way,” said Morton.
The Terriers continued to score in the fourth quarter, including two more goals from Stevenson, who led BU with seven points on the day. Sophomore Izabella Amonte also scored her second goal on the day, and Tillier completed a hat trick after receiving a cross-crease feed.
Despite the Terriers’ improvement on both sides of the restraining line, the teams tied the quarter with four goals each, ending the game 20-14.
With this win, Loyola continues their 90-game conference winning streak and handed BU their fourth Patriot League loss of the season.
“We have a lot of fight in us, and that’s something I was most proud of,” said Morton. “I think for us to kind of come out and win that second half —obviously we didn’t win the game —but I was really proud of our ability to stick together, both as an offensive and defensive unit.”
The Terriers will be traveling to New York on Wednesday for their next conference matchup against Colgate on April 16 at 5 p.m.
