Men’s Soccer: Terriers in total control in 1-0 road win over Saint Joseph’s

Boston University men’s soccer (2-1) defeated Saint Joseph’s (0-3) 1-0 following a controlling performance in Philadelphia on Thursday night. Following a loss to No. 23 New Hampshire, the Terriers dictated play from start to finish against their opponent.

The Terriers struck early with a goal from junior forward Daniel Kim in just the 11th minute, and they limited the Hawks to just one shot on goal throughout the match.

“I’m really proud of the guys for finding a way to get a result in not a pretty soccer game,” BU head coach Kevin Nylen said postgame.

The Terriers started the first half on the front foot when senior midfielder Andrew Rent stung the gloves of St. Joseph’s goalie Trevor Jackson with a curling effort from outside the box. Jackson was able to parry the powerful shot from Rent to keep the Terriers off the scoreboard.

Jackson did well to keep the first Terrier effort out but was not able to replicate his effort four minutes later when a slick Terrier move was finished by Kim.

Graduate midfielder Colin Innes started things off with an elegant cross-field pass that found the feet of Rent who slotted a cut-back pass into the path of Kim who finished neatly into the bottom left corner of Jackson’s net.

“It was a really good goal early on, a great ball from [Innes],” Nylen said
The Terriers entered the break with a one-goal advantage and with four corner kicks compared to the Hawks’ zero.

BU remained in control for the majority of the second half as well. Senior goalkeeper Francesco Montali didn’t face his first shot on goal until the 69th minute of action where he comfortably saved an effort from Hawks senior defender Mikkel Andersen.

“At the end of the day we kept a clean sheet and are coming home with a result,” Nylen said.

The Terriers will return home to play UMass Lowell on Sunday at 3 p.m.
