The Boston University field hockey team (7-6, 4-0 PL) completed its first perfect weekend of the season after defeating the Northeastern Huskies (2-9) in a 2-1 overtime win on Sunday at Dedham Field.

The Terriers have officially improved their record to over .500 for the first time this season. The team also remains at the top of the Patriot League after its win against Colgate on Saturday.

The game started off slow, with neither team being able to maintain possession and BU receiving multiple fouls. The first notable play of the game was a shot made by freshman forward Amalia Preece at the 4:58 mark.

Northeastern received the first two penalty corners of the game, which were both given to junior midfielder Sarah Coyle. The first penalty corner resulted in a shot, which was saved by senior goalkeeper Caroline Kelly.

The first goal of the game was scored by sophomore forward Payton Anderson off a penalty stroke at the 13:15 mark.

BU’s defense was able to keep Northeastern from advancing toward its goal for the majority of the first quarter, holding the Huskies to only two shots on goal.

Northeastern’s offense began to push back when sophomore midfielder Lara Taylor received a penalty stroke 26 seconds into the second quarter. The Huskies maintained possession for a drive led by Coyle and freshman forward Emilia Adragna, but none of their shots landed a goal.

The Huskies received five penalty corners and five shots in their 6-minute push toward the Terrier’s net, keeping the Terriers at zero in both areas. Northeastern tied the game at the 27:34 mark after a goal from freshman forward Emmy Stubbs.

At the start of the second half, freshman forward Matru Coulo received a green card, the first and only penalty of the game.

The Terriers received three penalty corners and three shots while holding Northeastern to zero throughout the third quarter. None of BU’s advances were able to get past the Huskies’ defense after multiple blocks and a save from the Huskies’ graduate student goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy.

In the fourth, both BU and Northeastern received one penalty corner, but the Terriers dominated toward the end of the period after attempting three shots within a minute.

With a tied score of 1-1, the game went into overtime.

Junior midfielder Thalia Steenssens received the first penalty corner in overtime at the 62:18 mark. This was followed by another penalty corner by sophomore midfielder Katie Devine and a shot from Coulo, which was saved by the Huskies’ goalkeeper.

In the final moments, BU made back-to-back shots on goal before Steenssen scored a goal — her first of the season — which ended the game in a win for the Terriers.

The Terriers will hit the road to play the Lafayette College Leopards in another Patriot League matchup on October 15 at 12 p.m. at Fisher Stadium.
