Graduate center Sukhmail Mathon was named Patriot League Player of the Year Monday, the first time a Terrier has taken home player of the year honors since BU joined the conference in 2013.

Mathon averaged a double-double — the first time a Terrier has done so in 25 seasons — and helped lead BU to the third-best record in the conference. Mathon was also selected for the All-Defensive Team for the second time in his career.

Graduate guard Javante McCoy was named to the All-Patriot League First Team and senior forward Walter Whyte was selected for the All-PL Third Team. McCoy and Whyte’s selections were the third all-league nominations each has received.

Mathon averaged 15.1 PPG and 10.3 RPG, 12th best in the country, and was the only player in the conference to average a double-double. His 16 double-doubles on the season rank seventh in NCAA Division I, and Mathon also ranks third nationally in offensive rebounds per game with 3.90.

The Shavertown, Pa. native reached 1,000 career points Saturday, becoming the 39th Terrier to accomplish the feat. Mathon’s 837 career rebounds are the third-most in BU history and the 10th-most in Patriot League history.

McCoy’s first-team selection is his first after being named to the third and second teams in 2020 and 2021, respectively. McCoy ends the regular season averaging 17.1 PPG, the third-highest scoring total in the league. His 4,288 minutes are second-most in BU history and his 1,850 career points are the fourth-highest total by a Terrier.

Whyte’s third-team selection was his second third-team honor; he was also named to the second team in 2020. Whyte averaged 12.7 PPG and 5.9 RPG despite battling a mid-season injury. His 1,202 career points are 20th-most in Terrier history.

Prior to Mathon, a BU player had not won conference player of the year honors since 2012, when Darryl Partin was named 2012 America East Player of the Year. Six Terriers have now been named conference player of the year between the America East Conference and the Patriot League.

BU kicks off its postseason on Thursday against Loyola Maryland, which had a first-team honoree and Player of the Year candidate in guard Cam Spencer. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Case Gym.
