Women’s Lacrosse: Terriers fall to Fairfield, drop to 0-3

By Joe Eachus

The Boston University women’s lacrosse team’s nightmare start continued on Wednesday afternoon, as they fell to the Fairfield Stags, 14-10.

The Terriers (0-3, 0-0 PL) are off to their worst start since the 2014 season, when they dropped three straight contests to ranked teams to start their season. Meanwhile, the Stags’ (3-1, 0-0 MAAC) campaign to repeat as conference champions is off to a stellar beginning.

BU was led by freshman attack Matty Spaeth who scored four goals for the Terriers in her third collegiate game, as well as junior midfield Claire Gola and sophomore attack Tobey Tick, who scored two goals each.

Fairfield junior attack Libby Rowe had a six-point afternoon with four goals,

The Terriers got off to a hot start with a 2-0 run to open up the game, but the Stags answered with a five-goal deluge to close out the first frame with a comfortable lead.

Senior goalie Kennady Smith was pulled in the first quarter after allowing five goals on six shots, and sophomore Reilly Agres made eight saves in relief while allowing nine goals.

It was largely a game of runs, as the teams did not trade goals once during the entire game.

A 3-0 Terrier run nearly became a 4-0 run, as Tick had a goal that would have earned her her first career hat trick and tied the game called back due to a dangerous release, and instead served a two minute penalty that killed all momentum for BU going into halftime.

Out of the break, Fairfield extended their lead back up to three goals, and BU was shut out in the defensive-minded third quarter.

Into the final frame, the Terriers erupted on a three-goal run to even things up, but were not able to finish it out as Fairfield rattled off four straight, including the dagger with 25 seconds left on the clock.

BU will hope to earn their first win of the season as they travel to Amherst to take on 2-1 UMass on Saturday, with opening draw scheduled for 1 p.m.
