The Boston University women’s lacrosse team struggled in their season opener, falling 16-10 to the Vermont Catamounts on Wednesday night.

The Terriers (0-1, 0-0 PL) had difficulties containing the Catamounts’ (2-0, 0-0 AEC) offense, allowing three individuals to pot hat tricks. Freshman attackers Maddie Erskine and Claire Adelheim each had four-point nights for UVM, while for BU, sophomore midfielder Cassie Reinertson scored four points of her own.

“I think there’s a lot to learn from,” BU head coach Lauren Morton said of the team’s efforts. “There were certain things we expected with being an inexperienced group. I’m disappointed in some of the little things: ground balls, working together on the clear. But I think a lot of things in our control, which is great.”

Junior attack Lauren Kaye scored a hat trick in the losing effort. Redshirt junior attack Teagan Lucchese, a transfer from Drexel, scored her first goal with the Terriers.

Though BU got off to an early lead with freshman attack Matty Spaeth’s first collegiate goal 58 seconds into the game, UVM responded with a 3-0 scoring run. The Terriers battled back with a 4-0 run between the first and second quarters, but the Catamounts rattled off a 5-0 run to end the half with a comfortable 10-7 lead.

Despite their best efforts, BU would only manage three more goals in the second half to fall flat in their season opener.

In sophomore goalie Reilly Agres’ first appearance, she made nine saves on 25 shots on goal. Junior attack Jen Barry was once again dominant on draw controls, winning 11 alone and helping the Terriers to win the draw control battle, 18-11.

UVM dominated offensively, taking 43 shots to BU’s 20. On the other side of the ball, BU committed 23 turnovers.

BU will take on defending NCAA champion and No. 1 ranked Boston College in Chestnut Hill on Saturday. “We need to focus on ourselves. They’re certainly a phenomenal opponent,” Morton said of the coming matchup. “Valuing possession a little bit better will be really important.”

Opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
