Women’s Hockey: Terriers score three unanswered, beat Maine in overtime

The Boston University Terriers scored three unanswered goals in a 3-2 overtime win against the University of Maine Black Bears at Walter Brown Arena on Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Lacey Martin had a goal and an assist, including the game-winning goal, for the Terriers (12-13-5, 11-8-4), Sophomore forward Claire O’Leary and senior forward Courtney Correia each scored. Senior goaltender Kate Stuart made 22 saves.

“Obviously, the excitement of the comeback win was big,” BU head coach Brian Durocher said. “Thankfully, Kate made, I think two, maybe three real good saves in the third period that kept us at 2-1. … A big two points for us.”

Junior forward Morgan Trimper and sophomore defender Elise Morphy each had a goal for Maine (12-18-1, 10-13-1), and sophomore goaltender Jordan Mattison made 37 saves.

Trimper scored 3:28 into the first period to give Maine a 1-0 lead, deflecting freshman forward Alyssa Wruble’s centering pass through Stuart’s legs.

Morphy doubled the lead for the Black Bears at 4:12 of the second on the power play when her one-timer from the point found its way through traffic and in.

“Not exactly sure why the slow start, but we’ll kind of look over it again,” Durocher said. “I think the bottom line was we just weren’t executing as far as catching passes, and getting our feet moving. We made a good team look like a superb team by not really doing our part, but credit to Maine. They came out of the gate, and got the lead they wanted to try to get.”

O’Leary got BU on the board at 4:35 of the third, cashing in on a rebound at the bottom of the right circle for her first goal of the season. The Hingham, Mass., native was also celebrating her birthday.

“It was a birthday goal for, so at double happy for her that she had it happen on the special day,” Durocher said. “It’s really important, and I thought she played well up in Vermont … she was was pretty consistent, pretty solid. Everything she does, she may do it with less flash than some other people, but she has strength, she has size and good composure out there. To pick up a rebound and put that away was huge for us.”

Correia tied it 2-2 at 18:05 with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle on a set play off the draw.

Martin scored at 1:03 of overtime to win it for the Terriers with a wrist shot bar down from the high slot.

“Lacey’s a kid who shoots the puck extremely well,” Durocher said. “I was kind of looking for her to to finish real late in the game when she had a great opportunity on a 2-on-1. But she cashed in the second time, so credit to her.

“We played 3-on-3 to a T, where you don’t want to rush the situation. You kind of want to get yourself in a position where maybe you can get some type of momentum, some type of pace, and put pressure on the defending team. We did just that.”

The Terriers will close their regular season with a home-and-home series against Providence College, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Schneider Arena in Providence.
