Women’s Hockey: Terriers return to win column with victory over surging UVM

By Stevie Potter

The Boston University Terriers (11-12-4, 10-7-4 HE) won the first of two away outings against the No. 2 team in the Hockey East standings, the University of Vermont Catamounts (19-10-2, 16-7-1 HE), putting a stop to their nine-game win streak with a 4-3 decision at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Friday.

BU opened the scoring with a goal by junior defender Nadia Mattivi at 11:12 of the first period.

UVM’s Kristina Shanahan tied it 1-1 with 50 seconds left in the first. Fortunately for BU, a team that is 5-1-0 when leading after 20 minutes of play, senior forward Courtney Correia found the back of the net with less than 30 seconds left on the clock.

The second period was the most penalty-heavy period of the game with four of the game’s six penalties occurring in that time frame. Of those six total penalties, all but one were tripping calls, with the outlier being a roughing penalty on Terrier  senior forward Mackenna Parker.

Both BU and UVM tallied a goal in the second period. Once again Boston cashed in first. This time with a power-play goal by sophomore forward Lacey Martin at 4:25. Vermont’s only goal of the period came from sophomore forward Maddy Skelton.

The two teams went into the last 20 minutes of play with a score of 3-2.

Following the pattern of the previous two periods, the Terriers would score first. BU’s final goal of the game came courtesy of junior forward Julia Nearis, who gave BU a 4-2 lead over the Catamounts.

This time, the Catamounts answered the Terriers’ goal with astonishing speed, putting a dent in the 4-2 lead just 27 seconds after it was created. Shanahan, who is of no relation to Terrier freshman goalie Callie Shanahan, got her second of the night. With the goal occurring at 12:35 into the last 20 minutes of play and the scoreboard showing only a difference of one goal, it appeared that UVM would mount a comeback.

The Catamounts had a golden opportunity at the end of regulation. With BU senior forward Emma Wuthrich in the box and an extra attacker in place of their netminder, Jessie McPherson (23 saves), it seemed almost certain that UVM would tie the game. Despite the 6-4 advantage, Callie Shanahan stood tall and did not allow a game-tying goal to enter her net.

Shanahan made 27 saves throughout the afternoon contest.

The Terriers will play the Catamounts once more this weekend, with the next battle occurring on Saturday at 3 pm.
