Women’s Hockey: Terrier to host UConn Friday, visit BC Saturday

By Stevie Potter

The Boston University Terriers (10-10-4, 9-6-3 HE) will play two conference games this weekend against the University of Connecticut Huskies (20-6-2, 14-5-2 HE) and the Boston College Eagles (15-11-0, 12-8-0 HE).

Friday night’s game will take place at home for the Terriers, who will face off against UConn. Puck drop for the matchup will be at 7 p.m. in Walter Brown Arena.

Throughout the history between these two hockey clubs, BU has the edge with an overall record of 29-14-7, but have not won in three straight tries against the Huskies. UConn is having a winning season this year, and BU has fallen in both games (Nov. 5-6) played so far this season, with both battles ending with a one-goal differential, 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.

UConn is coming off a successful weekend beating Holy Cross 2-1 last Sunday. The Terriers on the other hand are coming back to Walter Brown after a disappointing 4-1 loss to Harvard in the Semifinals round of the 43rd Women’s Beanpot tournament.

Senior forwards Natalie Snodgrass (10 goals, 13 assists), Viki Harknesss (10 goals, 13 assists) and Morgan Wabick (nine goal, 14 assists) have paced the Huskies offensively with 23 points each in 28 games. Senior goaltender Samantha Carpentier-Yelle has an 11-4-1 record, a .917 save percentage and 1.82 goal-against average on the season in addition to three shutouts. Freshman Megan Warrener has two shutouts, a .944 save percentage, a 1.21 GAA and 9-2-1 record.

BU’s second opponent of the weekend, rival Boston College, had a very different experience in the first round of this year’s Beanpot, upsetting Northeastern 3-1. This win has put the Eagles in a position to possibly win this year’s tournament, as they will face Harvard in next Tuesday’s final game.

For the Eagles, freshman forward Abby Newhook is their leading scorer with 14-12–26 in 26 games on the year. Junior forward Hannah Bilka (10 goals, 13 assists) and senior forward Kelly Browne (seven goals, 16 assists) each have 23 points in 26 games. Senior netminder Abigail Levy has controlled the crease with a 14-11-0 record, a .938 save percentage and a 2.40 GAA.

The all-time record between the Comm. Ave. rivals tips in BC’s favor, with the historical record being 32-24-7. However, the Terriers have won the only game that the two teams have played so far this season. The invigorating game took place on November 21, 2021, and BU came out with a 5-4 victory.

For BU this season, senior forward Courtney Correia has led the way offensively with 11 goals and 10 assist for 21 points in 22 games. Senior goaltender Kate Stuart has a 5-7-4 record in 16 appearances with a .921 save percentage and a 2.34 GAA. She has shared the net with freshman netminder Callie Shanahan, who holds a 5-3-0 marker, a .927 save percentage, a 2.26 GAA and one shutout in eight appearances.

This weekend’s game between the Terriers and the Eagles will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill. Puck drop for Saturday’s afternoon game will take place at 3 p.m.
