Women’s Hockey: Terriers’ comeback falls short against No. 7 Yale

NEW HAVEN, C.T. — Senior forward Mackenna Parker scored in the third period to make it a one-goal game, but it was not enough as the Boston University Terriers fell 3-2 to the No. 7 Yale University Bulldogs at Ingalls Rink on Wednesday night. 

Parker and senior forward Emma Wuthrich each scored for BU (9-6-3, 8-4-3 HE), and senior forward Courtney Correia had two assists, extending her points streak to four games (3g, 4a). Senior goaltender Kate Stuart made 28 saves. The Terriers lost for the first time in three games.

Junior forward Rebecca Vanstone scored twice for Yale (10-3-1, 5-2-1 ECAC), including the game-winning goal in the second period. First year forward Anna Bargman had a goal and an assist, and sophomore forward Ella Hartje had a goal and an assist. First year goaltender Pia Dukaric made 17 saves. 

Vanstone gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 17:57 of the first period. Hartje stole the puck from BU sophomore defender Tamara Giaquinto and moved the puck towards Vanstone in the slot, who scored on a one-timer.

Wuthrich tied it 1-1 at 6;49 of the second. Giaquinto kept the puck alive at the point and Correia the puck to Wuthrich, who sent a snap shot off the post and in.

Bargman scored on the rebound of her own deflection to break the deadlock at 15:54, giving Yale a 2-1 lead on the power play.

Vanstone scored her second of the game 53 seconds later to put make it a 3-1 lead for the Bulldogs, finishing a move on her backhand.

Parker scored to make it 3-2 at 6:03 of the third after skating around a Yale defender and shooting bar down.

The Bulldogs were 1-for-4 on the power play. They hold the third-best advantage in the nation. BU did not get a power play opportunity.

Wuthrich now has three goals and three assists over her last six games. Parker has five goals and one assist in the same span.

Yale heads into the holiday break with two straight wins. The Bulldogs are 8-1-1 in their last ten contests and have won four of their last five games. They will return to action on Jan. 4, hosting Sacred Heart at 6 p.m.

BU closes the fall semester with 5-5-0 record over their last ten games, winning three of their last four. The Terriers will return to action with their first contest against Syracuse in program history, taking on the Orange in the Battle at the ‘Burgh semifinals on Jan. 1 at 4 p.m.
