Women’s Hockey: Vermont dominates Terriers, 4-0

The Boston University Terriers (4-4) fell to the University of Vermont Catamounts (6-2) by a final score of 4-0 at Walter Brown Arena on Friday night.

“Vermont probably showed to be a better team today,” BU head coach Brian Durocher said. “I think my staff complimented them on playing as a five person unit, which I think allowed them to play quicker, play a little bit more cohesively.”

Senior netminder Corinne Schroeder got the nod in net for BU, making 25 saves on 28 shots. For UVM, freshman goaltender Jessie McPherson started in goal, saving all 22 shots she faced.

The Catamounts got the scoring early less than two minutes in as freshman forward Tynka Pátková notched her first collegiate goal.

Pátková took a pass from sophomore forward Hailey Burns, and sent a wrist shot low, blocker side on Schroeder. The puck ffound it’s way under Schroeder’s arm, rang off the post, and barely snuck over the goal line.

From there UVM would not look back.

After a scoreless second frame, the Catamounts came out firing again at the start of a period, this time the third.

2:46 into the final frame of regulation, freshman forward Maddy Skelton doubled Vermont’s lead.

Pátková sent a cross-crease feed to Skelton, who was right on the doorstep to sneak it past Schroeder for her second of the season.

Exactly two minutes later, the deficit became three for the Terriers.

Vermont senior forward Val Caldwell took a pass from freshman forward Natálie Mlynková from behind the net. Before Schroeder could come out to challenge the shot, Caldwell one-timed the puck right over her shoulder.

BU had a couple chances to get back into the game before time ran out, both sparked by senior forward and captain Jesse Compher, but McPherson made a couple strong saves to preserve her third career shutout.

Before regulation expired, the Catamounts added an empty-netter to seal the win.

The Terriers managed to hold UVM scoreless on their two power play opportunities, but failed to capitalize on any of the three advantages they got for themselves, continuing a trend of power play struggles. While Durocher thought his group did some things well, there was still much to be desired on the power play.

“You’ve got to make good decisions, make poised decisions and not give the puck away,” he said. “I felt like we took probably a few too many shots from the flanks versus getting some pucks from the center.”

BU and Vermont will return to action tomorrow evening at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
