The Boston University men’s ice hockey team announced Tuesday that the team has named Bobby Goepfert as a volunteer assistant coach.

Goefpert will serve as the Terriers’ goaltending coach after Brian Eklund, who held the role for four seasons, moved on during the offseason.

“We are very excited to add Bobby to our program,” Terrier head coach Albie O’Connell said in a statement. “He has been a proven winner throughout his coaching and playing careers and brings a ton of knowledge to our staff. Our young goalies will be in great hands and we feel that Bobby can really help these guys continue to develop.”

Goepfert’s most recent experience includes working as an assistant coach with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he earned Player and Goaltender of the Year honors as a player during the 2001-02 campaign.

He also served as head coach of the Syracuse Stars in the U.S. Premier Hockey League (USPHL) after previously working as an assistant coach with Syracuse’s under-16 team.

Goepfert played nine seasons professionally, mostly between Germany and the American Hockey League (AHL), after being selected in the sixth round (171st overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

In college, Goepfert was a two-time All-American in goal for St. Cloud State, posting a .924 save percentage in each of his two seasons with the team after spending time at Providence College, where he a .924 save percentage as a freshman and a .918 marker as a sophomore before transferring. The Kings Park, NY, native was named among the three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award during his senior season in 2006-07.

Playing for the United States during the 2003 World Junior Championships (WJC), Goepfert boasted the best save percentage for the entire tournament, recording a .937 marker in seven games to go along with a 1.77 goals-against average (GAA).

The Terriers are welcoming in two new goaltenders to the fold this year in freshmen Drew Commesso and Vincent Duplessis. Commesso was selected 46th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Sophomore Ashton Abel is returning after posting a 3-3-2 record to go along with an .891 save percentage and a 3.19 GAA in nine appearances last season after joining the team during winter break. Last season BU goaltenders Sam Tucker, Vinnie Purpura and Abel combined for a goals-against average of 3.52 and an .888 save percentage.
