Soccer: Men’s, women’s seasons come to an end without playoff berth

Within the past few weeks, both Patriot League soccer regular seasons reached their finish, bringing the conclusion to the 2019 campaigns of the BU men’s and women’s soccer teams.

Despite early-season struggles, the men’s team proved to be the closer to earning a playoff spot, staying in the postseason race right up to the final whistle of the regular season, but ultimately being done in by a 2-1 loss at Army West Point.

The women’s team could not replicate their 2018 magic a year later, finishing in a two-way tie for the bottom spot in the Patriot League with just seven points, missing the playoffs after winning the conference title last fall.

Senior forwards Shannon Keefe (3) and Matt McDonnell (7) provided the most goals for the women’s and men’s teams respectively. Senior defenseman Satchel Cortet finished second for the men with two, both game-winners that kept BU’s playoff hopes alive.

Other fourth-year Terriers that will departing include women’s seniors Chloee Sagmoe, Ann Marie Jaworski, Kelly Park, Emma Heil, Rachel Kingston, and Kelly Harris, plus men’s soon-to-be-graduates Schuler Fuchsman, Jasper Verplanke, and Mana Chavali.

With a number of underclassmen showing encouraging potential and stepping into significant roles over the course of the fall for both teams, there is reason to believe that both squads will be ready to make a playoff push in 2020.
