Entering winless in 2019, the Boston University men’s soccer team overcame reigning Patriot League champions Colgate in overtime at Nickerson Field to win their first game of the season.

It was BU who took the surprise lead in the early minutes through their senior captain and leading goal-scorer Matt McDonnell, finishing off a corner kick from sophomore Kari Petursson.

The Terrier defense was able to resolutely defend their lead for nearly 70 minutes, but the visitors finally found their equalizer late in the second half from Edward Bass, forcing the game to overtime.

Eight minutes into the additional period, Jorge Lopez Lacu delivered a long free kick towards the Colgate box. Left unmarked, senior captain Satchel Cortet headed it goal-bound, with just enough power to beat the Raider keeper.

Cortet’s tally would be the golden goal winner, sending the Terrier faithful into pandemonium. Some optimistic supporters even left the contest claiming that it would be remembered as the game that turned around what would ultimately be regarded as a miraculous BU season.

BU will look to turn this victory into a win streak when they face American on the road on Friday, October 11.
