Men’s Hockey: BU routs Merrimack 5-1 on Senior Night

The Terriers got off to a hot start against the Warriors and never looked back in another lockdown performance for Jake Oettinger in net as BU beat Merrimack 5-1 on Saturday.
In Bobo Carpenter’s first game since January the Terriers took care of business and from just watching anyone could see that his presence completely changed the dynamic of this team. If you combine his return with a dominant game from Jake Oettinger and a strong return to form for Chad Krys, the last place Merrimack Warriors stood no chance on Saturday.
Just four minutes into the game Dante Fabbro opened the scoring with the first of three power play goals for the Terriers. Then with nine minutes to play in the first, Ty Amonte took a shorthanded breakaway all the way in on Craig Pantano and scored to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.
After assisting on both goals in the first, defenseman Chad Krys scored two goals of his own in the second period. Just three minutes into the period he scored on a power play to extend the Terriers’ lead to three. Merrimack finally got on the board seven minutes into the period off of an even strength goal from sophomore forward Tyler Drevitch. Then in s four on four situation, Krys scored his second goal of the period with just over 11 minutes to play in the second.
In the opening minutes of the third, Joel Farabee scored one of the nicest goals of his young Terrier career. For the team’s third power play goal of the game, the freshman juked out a Merrimack defenseman before then faking out the goalie and slotting it in behind his legs for his 13th goal of the season.
On the night, Chad Krys was lights out for the entire game. In addition to scoring his two goals in the second, he also assisted on all three of the Terriers’ other goals. His partner on defense, Dante Fabbro, also played a part in every single goal of the night with four assists in addition to his own goal.
Throughout the game Jake Oettinger was excellent in net for BU. He allowed just the one goal and saved 32 shots while making some incredible, cross-crease saves to keep the Warriors from scoring.
Despite his dominance in net, Oettinger was pulled with seven and a half minutes to go and was replaced with senior Max Prawdzik. For Prawdzik it was likely his last home game as a Terrier and with the game effectively over with a four goal lead, O’Connell opted to let the senior have one final chance in net for BU.
Oddly enough for the Terriers, they did not score a single five on five goal against the Warriors. In addition to the three power play goals, they also scored a shorthanded goal and a four on four goal on Saturday.
The Terriers will head up to Orono next Saturday to close out the regular season in a tilt against the University of Maine Black Bears.
