Through the Lens: “BUmageddon” – The busiest day of the year on campus

For those who work around the Boston University Athletics Department, Saturday, Feb. 16 has been circled on the calendar for a while. Seven on-campus matches called for all hands on deck, even for WTBU Sports.
Photographer Gabi Turi (@gabi_turi on Instagram) was as active as any, shooting five of the day’s events: women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s ice hockey, men’s ice hockey, and men’s lacrosse.
Here is a look at “BUmageddon” through the lens:
Men’s basketball (11-16, 4-10 PL) hosted a Saturday afternoon contest against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in hopes of ending a three game losing skid. The Terriers overcame a 19-point fourth quarter deficit to bring the game within one possession. The go-ahead shot rimmed out, leaving BU with a 84-79 loss.
Junior Tyler Scanlon led the way with 19 points, five steals, and six assists, while junior Max Mahoney added 17 points and eight boards in the scarlet and white’s fourth straight loss.
Next up men’s basketball heads to Holy Cross for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Monday, Feb. 18.
On Nickerson Field, our men’s lacrosse team had different fortunes during their home opener. The Terriers (2-1) welcomed the Dartmouth University to Commonwealth Avenue, where they handed the Big Green a 15-8 loss.
While battling the cold temperatures, the BU attackers handled their business. Chris Gray and James Burr finished with three goals a piece, while Timmy Ley led the Terriers with five goals.
The scarlet and white next head to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart. The contest is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
Perhaps the team with the most momentum on campus is the women’s ice hockey squad (18-6-8, 14-5-6 WHEA). Fresh off their first ever Beanpot Championship win since 1981, the Terriers took the ice of Agganis Arena to face New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Kate Stuart got the start in goal, allowing three goals and recording 41 saves, one save short of her career-high. BU and UNH finished at a 3-3 tie on Saturday, but the Terriers took a 2-1 win over the Wildcats on Sunday.
Beanpot heroine, redshirt junior Sammy Davis, as well as sophomore Jesse Compher, each recorded one goal and two assists on Saturday to keep the Terriers’ offensive efficiency at a peak.
Women’s ice hockey has a short break to rest until a Friday, Feb. 22 matchup against the University of Connecticut later this week. Puck drops for the Terriers’ last regular season road game at 7 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
Back inside Case Gym, women’s basketball (12-11, 8-5) took on Holy Cross as part of the Turnpike Trophy. Senior Payton Hauck put up a team-high 18 points, while senior Naiyah Thompson added 14 points and eight rebounds of her own. However, a balanced effort from the Crusaders was enough to hand BU a 64-61 loss.
A usual suspect for positive energy, freshman Riley Childs found 11 points and corralled in 13 rebounds in Saturday’s start. The Terriers have a short turnaround before facing the always tough American University Eagles on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 11:30 a.m.
And finally, men’s ice hockey (11-5-3, 9-8-2 HEA) hosted the University of Connecticut Huskies to round off a hectic “BUmageddon”. Coming off a Friday night loss to UConn, the Terriers found their groove, coming away with a 2-0 win. Goalie Jake Oettinger posted 26 saves in his 11th career shutout.
On offense, Joel Farabee and Ty Amonte grabbed the two Terriers goals, while Kasper Kotkansolo, Ryan Coonan, and Cam Crotty all recorded an assist in Saturday’s win. The scarlet and white next prepare for a weekend series on the road in Burlington, Vt. against the University of Vermont Catamounts.
