Through the Lens: A November to remember for Boston University athletics

While it’s not quite done yet, November was an important and exciting month for Boston University’s sports teams. The men’s soccer team found itself in the midst of tough postseason action, while women’s soccer and field hockey took home Patriot League titles.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball squads kicked off what is bound to be a pair of thrilling seasons, as men’s and women’s ice hockey grinded through a rigorous November schedule.

After taking home the Patriot League regular season trophy, the women’s soccer team hosted the Patriot League Tournament. The Terriers defeated Army then Lehigh to win their fourth Patriot League championship in six years.
Advancing to the NCAA Tournament, the scarlet and white headed south to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they were knocked off by the Tigers.
In the emotional mayhem, head coach Nancy Feldman grabbed her 400th collegiate victory.
As one coach reached her 400th win, another was just beginning the journey. Marisa Moseley, first year head coach of the BU women’s basketball team, now has an official “W” in the win column, after the Terriers took down Brown at home, 72-51.
BU currently sits at 2-2 on the year, with an upcoming game against New Hampshire on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at home. The Terriers are perfect at Case Gym so far this season (2-0), after a 4-9 home record last year.
Junior Nia Irving has led the way in terms of scoring and rebounds for the scarlet and white, putting up an average of 12.8 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Senior Payton Hauck has been on fire early on, with 12 ppg and a team season-high 20 points against Bryant.
As a team, women’s basketball seems to have more confidence in 2018. A game-winning basket by sophomore Katie Nelson against Bryant, as well as improved play overall from senior Lauren Spearman, proves this team’s new determined mentality.
On the men’s side of the court, BU started off the year with a big win against Northeastern on the road. In this thrilling season-opener, Tyler Scanlon grabbed 16 points to go with 8 rebounds in his junior debut.
BU opened home play with a close loss against the Vermont Catamounts. It was junior Max Mahoney who got Case Gym rocking after a nasty jam on a Vermont team that is likely to reach the NCAA Tournament in March. Mahoney averages a team-high 14.3 ppg thus far.
More recently, the Terriers have faced a trio of losses, placing them at 3-4. However, a shining light early in the season has been the team’s newest additions.
Freshmen Jack Hemphill, Garrett Pascoe, Fletcher Tynen, Jonas Harper, and Jordan Guest, as well as transfer Alex Vilarino, have shown positive and impactful play through their first games in the scarlet and white.
BU men’s basketball next takes the floor at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the University of New Hampshire.
