Men’s Hockey: Four Terriers selected at 2018 NHL Draft

The Boston University men’s hockey program was well represented at last weekend’s NHL Draft in Dallas, which is more than usual nowadays.

Four current and future Terriers heard their name called – which tied for the most along with four other schools. Here’s what happened over the weekend for the scarlet and white.

Round 1, Pick 4 – Ottawa Senators : Brady Tkachuk, Rising sophomore

The first Terrier off the board, Tkachuk was selected fourth overall by Ottawa, becoming the highest BU draftee since Jack Eichel went to the Buffalo Sabres second overall in 2015. As a freshman for BU in 2017-2018, Tkachuk finished fourth on the team with 31 points, tallying 8 goals and a team-high 23 assists.

On draft night, Tkachuk told reporters he was undecided about whether he will return to BU for his sophomore season or turn pro. New head coach Albie O’Connell would certainly welcome the left-shot forward back to Comm. Ave for one more season.

Round 1, Pick 14 – Philadelphia Flyers : Joel Farabee, Incoming freshman

Joining Tkachuck in the first round, Farabee went 10 picks later to Philadelphia. The duo became the 18th and 19th Terrier skaters to be selected in the first round of an NHL Draft.

Farabee, an incoming freshman, was the captain of the U.S. U18 team this past season. A 6-foot forward, Farabee had 76 points (33 goals, 43 assists) in 62 games for the USNTDP and played in the last two Under-18 World Championships. Farabee will play for BU in the 2018-2019 season.

Round 3, Pick 69 – Chicago Blackhawks : Jake Wise, Incoming freshman 

Wise, a local product and a teammate of Farabee’s on the USNTDP team this season, went early third round to Chicago. The center, from Reading, Mass., played two years of high school hockey at Central Catholic in Lawrence before heading to the USHL. Wise posted 43 points (11 goals, 32 assists) in 38 games for the U-18 squad. Wise is an incoming freshman as well.

Round 6, Pick 177 – Pittsburgh Penguins : Liam Gorman, 2019 commit 

The Penguins took a gamble in the sixth round, selecting Gorman, who just finished his junior year of high school at St. Sebastian’s in Needham. The 6-foot-3-inch forward tallied 33 points (16 goals, 17 assists) for St. Seb’s. He will not join BU until the 2019-2020 season.
