Men’s Soccer: Terriers defeat Army 3-1, stay alive for PL Title

BU v Army

By: Matt Doherty

BOSTON — Freshman Austin D’Anna scored two goals to propel Boston University to a 3-1 victory over the Army Black Knights Wednesday night at West Point. The win keeps the Terriers tied for first place in the Patriot League with two regular season games remaining.

D’Anna netted his first goal of the evening late in the first half when he finished off a cross from fellow freshman Toti Knutsson to put the Terriers up 2-0.

After Army cut the lead in the half in the 82nd minute, D’Anna sealed the win for BU in the 83rd minute, this time finishing a cross from junior TJ Butzke that gave BU a 3-1 advantage.

With the win, the Terriers remain in a tie for first place with Loyola Maryland; both teams stand at 6-1 in the Patriot League.

Although the Greyhounds own the tiebreaker over BU, if the Terriers take care of business in their final two games and Loyola loses just one of their final games, BU will win the PL regular season crown and host the league tournament, which begins Nov. 7. As of now, the Terriers are one win away from at least clinching the number two seed and owning a first-round bye in the tournament.

In the win Wednesday, BU allowed their first road goal of the 2017 PL season. In total, the Terriers have a goal differential of 14-2 in Patriot League play.

Head Coach Neil Roberts continues to mix up his goalkeepers. On Wednesday, it was sophomore Michael Bernardi who got the start. He picked up his sixth win of the fall, allowing the one goal while making two saves.

Sophomore Satchel Cortet opened the scoring for the Terriers in the 22nd minute when he sent home a shot off a rebound attempt from Elias Lampis that was initially saved.

With the win, the Terriers are now 7-7-2 overall, the first time all season they’ve been at .500. BU will return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Bucknell. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
