Men’s Lacrosse: Last Second Goal Leads BU to Navy Victory

Move over, double overtime. Boston University found an even more exciting victory over Navy.
The Terriers start their season 4-0 for the first time in program history with an 8-7 victory over Navy. Jack Wilson scored with 1.5 seconds left on the clock in one of the quickest down-field rushes that can happen in a college lacrosse game.
BU forced Navy midfielder Greyson Torain to turn the ball over in the far corner from the Terriers’ offensive zone with 13 seconds left in the contest. A deep pass found John MacLean, who rushed into the offensive zone and passed to Cal Dearth in the Terrier midfield and he connected with Wilson for his third goal of the game.
Both Wilson and Dearth picked up four points, each with three goals and an assist. Michael Carbone and Greg Farris were the other goal scorers. Wilson extended his point streak to 30 games.
BU took the first lead of the game with a tally by Wilson, but the first quarter ended deadlocked at one. BU went on a four goal run with goals from Wilson, Carbone, and Dearth, but Navy responded with six straight goals to take a 7-5 lead.
With just under two minutes left in the game, Farris tied the contest 7-7. It seemed like the game was destined for overtime when Navy’s possession came to an abrupt end on the forced turnover, and BU took the lead and finished the game 8-7.
It is the second straight season BU has defeated Navy after toppling the Mids in double overtime last season. BU’s 4-0 start to the season is historic, but it also marks a perfect record on a four game road trip to start the season.
Christian Carson-Banister made ten saves in victory and he improves to 4-0 on the season himself. He and the Terrier defense are yet to allow more than seven goals in a game.
The Terriers were almost perfect on clears, going 16-for-18, and limited turnovers. Despite the six goal run for Navy, it was one of the more complete games and mistake-free contests for BU. The Terriers also only took one penalty that resulted in an EMO chance for Navy, and they took advantage of it with a goal.
The one area BU struggled was on the faceoff, where Joe Stucky went just 5-for-12 against Navy’s Brady Dove. Sam Talkow has missed all four games this season.
The road trip concludes with BU winning in nearly every way possible; an OT win over Providence, strong performances against UMass Lowell and Hartford, and now a regulation thriller.
With a victory over Navy, ranked 17/18 depending on the poll, there’s a good chance the Terriers enter the national rankings for the first time in 2017 after being on the bubble all year to open the season.
The Terriers finally hit the turf at Nickerson Field on Tuesday night when they host Bryant University.
