Women’s Lacrosse: BU Falls Short at BC

It might have been a loss, but it wasn’t a bad way to start the season for BU women’s lacrosse.

The Terriers headed to Boston College looking for revenge after a tough loss to the Eagles at Nickerson Field. This season, things were a bit different, with the Terriers falling just 13-11 but remaining positive.

“Split emotions,” said head coach Liz Robertshaw. “It’s a huge battle, and one of the ones you want to win. Our senior class wanted to go out and beat Boston College. You have that disappointment. On the flip side, I told them I couldn’t be more proud of their energy and effort.”

Goalie Caroline Meegan made a career high 17 saves to stop the Eagles for as long as she could, and BU was tied 7-7 at the half. BU caused 10 turnovers in a strong overall defensive effort.

The career outing wasn’t the only one for the senior goaltender, as Elisabeth Jayne scored the first five points of her career.

“It was a good way to start our season with a battle, and there’s things to fix, but overall I’m pleased with the energy and execution,” Robertshaw said.

Taylor Hardison tied her career high with four assists after picking up 36 last season. Avery Donahoe also tied her career high with four goals. Seven BU players overall found the back of the net.

Five freshmen were involved in play, including draw specialist McKenzie Howe who scored a goal. Howe’s goal cut the Eagle lead to 12-11, as close as BU would get before the Eagles would score their 13th of the contest and seal the game.

“I think the upperclassmen did a good job getting them [underclassmen] ready for for the rivalry,” said Robertshaw. “It’s just a battle and they really believed in it and got excited rather than nervous about it.”

The next time the Terriers take the field, it will be at home against UMass-Lowell. It might not have the same energy as the rivalry game against BC, but it’s the next challenge for this young team to overcome.

One way or another, the Terriers left Newton feeling positive about their future.

“We had a scrimmage this week and it didn’t go that well and I think the team took that very personally and made some changes and this was the perfect game to have next,” said Robertshaw. “If you can’t get up for BU-BC no matter the sport, you shouldn’t be going to these schools.”
