Women’s Hockey: BU Falters Late Against UConn

By: Dan Shulman

The Boston University Terriers women’s ice hockey team took a giant step back against an unsteady UConn team, losing via a late tally in Storrs, Connecticut on Tuesday by a score of 2-1.

The Terriers featured a trio of shuffled lines due to the absence of Rebecca Leslie at the U-22 Nation’s Cup. The new-look second line with Mary Parker, Sammy Davis, and Mary Grace Kelley produced for BU.

Kelley scored the opening goal with 22.8 seconds left in the first period off a nifty feed from Parker. The goal seemed to swing the momentum in the direction of the Terriers.

It was a relatively clean contest, with both teams only getting one penalty. UConn’s Jessica Stott took a hooking minor late in the second period. BU’s lone infraction came early in the third on a slashing minor to Sammy Davis.

UConn equalized just three minutes after Davis’ penalty expired. The always-dangerous Leah Lum set up Kayla Mee for a strike to tie it, 1-1.

Just six minutes later, UConn took the lead as Catherine Crawley beat BU goalie Victoria Hanson for the would-be game-winner. The Terriers continued to pressure and despite utilizing a late timeout, couldn’t find a way to tie it.

Huskies’ goalie Annie Belanger turned aside 28 shots in a full 60-minute effort while BU out-shot UConn, 29-24.

The Terriers will continue to search for their first win of 2017 when they welcome the Vermont Catamounts to Walter Brown for two games next weekend.
