URBAN Research Awards

URBAN Travel Awards

Each semester, BU URBAN solicits applications for Research Awards and Travel Awards. URBAN Research Awards support interdisciplinary research spanning both biogeoscience and environmental health in urban systems. We encourage proposals that pilot new projects or expand the interdisciplinary scope of existing projects. URBAN Travel Awards support participation in a conference to either (a) present trainee research; or (b) gain exposure to a field outside the trainee’s primary discipline (Biogeoscience, Environmental Health, Statistics, and Data Science).

The request for applications is usually sent to current trainees via email and in the Trainee Tribune within the first couple weeks of the fall and spring semesters. More information can be seen in prior requests for applications posted on the News & Events section of our website.

URBAN Non-Service Stipends

Thanks to the generosity of the BU Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the BU School of Public Health, and the BU Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, we have been fortunate to have a limited number of non-service stipends available to doctoral students across departments. Once we have confirmed stipends will be available, we typically open applications for these stipends in the spring for the following academic year (fall, spring, and summer), with primary outreach focused on faculty advisors. These are competitive stipends and submitting an application does not guarantee a trainee will receive funding.

Unfortunately, these funds are not available for master’s students.

Interdisciplinary Brainstorming

BU URBAN provides small-dollar funds on a rolling basis for trainees seeking to brainstorm interdisciplinary ideas together. All trainees are encouraged to apply!

Note: All presentations and publications generated during your enrollment in the URBAN program must acknowledge funding support from NSF with the following statement: “This work was initiated with support from a National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) grant to Boston University (DGE 1735087) and has also been supported by institutional funds from Boston University.”
