Interested in joining the BU URBAN Graduate Program in Urban Biogeoscience and Environmental Health?

Participation in BU URBAN is an exciting opportunity to benefit from expanded training and resources during your Ph.D. at Boston University. Trainees join BU URBAN from multiple participating departments across the university, creating a unique interdisciplinary community.

Prospective Ph.D. applicants to BU: You must first apply to a participating department in order to apply to BU URBAN. The following links will lead you to the application pages in each department. If you are interested in a department not listed below, please email Evan Kuras, our Program Manager, at to discuss further.

After you have applied to Boston University for Fall 2022, you may submit an application to BU URBAN. Applications are due Friday, January 7, 2022 at 5:00 pm EST and can be found below. We are offering three info sessions before the deadline – register here to hear from the Program Manager and current trainees!

Note: Your application to BU URBAN will be considered independently from your application to Boston University and thus we will only review the application materials you submit through our application form below. Applicants are welcome to recycle content so long as the prompts in the URBAN application are addressed in full. Please note that applicants must have already submitted an application to a Ph.D. Program at Boston University in order to be considered for BU URBAN. Application deadlines for our affiliated departments vary (see links above), but note that all deadlines are before January 7, 2022.

We particularly encourage individuals from groups underrepresented in STEM to apply, especially those who have attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Tribal Colleges and Universities; and Hispanic Serving Institutions.

As you prepare to apply and interview, we encourage you to read these two advice columns on Things I Wish I Knew before Applying for Doctoral Programs and Interviewing for Graduate Schools, led by Alexa Friedman (a PhD Student in Environmental Health) and co-written by Kate Connolly and Sean Mueller (both URBAN Trainees). We also recommend watching the video below for a perspective from Claudia Diezmartínez on how BU URBAN has helped her look at problems from different perspectives and cultivated a strong community.

Application for Fall 2022

Current Ph.D. students at BU: Applications to join our Fall 2022 cohort will open in Spring 2022 and will be due in May.
