Women’s Basketball: Terriers fall again
By Austin Rayamajhi
Boston University Women’s Basketball (3-7, 0-0 PL) battled against the University of Albany Great Danes Women’s Basketball (9-2, 0-0 AE) in a 62-46 loss in Albany.
The Terriers were looking to bounce back from a three-game losing streak against Bryant, Maine, and 11th-ranked North Carolina. The 42-point loss against the University of North Carolina was the largest loss of the Terriers’ season so far.
“We needed more people to step up and score the ball today,” said BU Head Coach Melissa Graves. “We just didn’t have it.”
The Great Danes dominated the opening quarter of the game. They opened up the game on a 16-4 run and led by 14 by the end of the first period.
The Terriers continued to struggle in the opening minutes of the second quarter, with Albany going on an 8-0 run. BU was down by 22 points with 5 minutes left in the second quarter, but they were able to turn their fortunes around before halftime.
Sophomore guard Taylor Williams went on an 11-0 run by herself, scoring three 3-point field goals along with a floater to bring the Terriers within 11. Another layup and a free throw brought BU to within eight, closing the second quarter on a 14-0 run.
“I thought we took some poor shots, we took some contested shots, and we turned the ball over at times,” said Graves. “I thought we could have had better shot selection.”
BU hoped the momentum from the end of the first half would carry over and help them complete the upset against the Great Danes. The Terriers cut the lead to six in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but this was the closest they would get to Albany.
BU scored just five points in the third quarter, with Albany closing the quarter on a 12-2 run. The Great Danes lead ballooned to 18 points entering the final quarter of play.
The two teams traded buckets for much of the fourth quarter. The Terriers were able to get as close as 14 in the final quarter, but Albany pushed the lead back up to 21 and ultimately closed the game in comfortable fashion.
Sophomore guard Delanie Hill led the way for the Great Danes, scoring 18 points and contributing six assists, a team high in both categories. Sophomore forward Allison Schwertner led the Terriers with a career-high 15 points.
“Today was just interesting; it was very up and down,” said Graves. “We executed in spurts.”
BU’s next game is its final game before conference play begins in late December. The matchup is back in Case Gym against the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Dec. 20 at 12 p.m., with the game available to stream on ESPN+.
