Gallery: No.1-ranked Men’s hockey comes out flat against No. 3/4 Michigan State
Boston University’s men’s hockey came into the weekend as the consensus No. 1 team in the country, but played a lethargic game against the Michigan State Spartans, losing 4-2. The Spartans struck first on the power play in the sixth minute of the first period. Moments later, the Terriers successfully challenged for a five-minute major, but all momentum was killed as the Spartans scored for a second time in the eighth minute, this time shorthanded. The Terriers, however, found their first goal also on the same power play, off a slapshot from sophomore defenseman Sascha Boumedienne for his first goal of the season. Michigan State capitalized one more time off another breakaway in the 16th minute of the first frame. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the middle frame. MSU began the final frame scoring again, two minutes into the period. Hoping to cut the deficit, the Terriers pulled sophomore goaltender Mikhail Yegorov to go 6-on-4 in a late period, and freshman forward Ryder Ritchie was able to break the Spartan’s defense.
