Women’s Lacrosse: Terriers battle hard, but lose 15-14 to Lehigh in OT
By Riley Lackey
Boston University Women’s Lacrosse (7-5, 2-3 PL) lost in overtime 15-14 to Lehigh University (4-7, 1-4 PL) Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem, PA.
The Terriers led from early in the first quarter until the last minute of regulation time, but the Mountain Hawks held BU close throughout and capitalized in overtime.
BU started the game strong, getting ahead 5-2, including a behind-the-back goal from sophomore attacker Izabella Amonte.
Lehigh came back with two goals of their own, cutting the lead to 5-4. Shortly after, Terrier junior Elle Stevenson responded quickly with two goals in 32 seconds.
At this point in the matchup, all four of Lehigh’s goals had come courtesy of its senior class, which was especially fitting as it was the program’s Senior Day game.
During the first half of the game, the Terriers largely controlled the draws, which they struggled with last weekend against the Naval Academy.
BU tallied on a few more goals in the second quarter from sophomore Tessa Geddes and senior Hannah Tillier, but the Mountain Hawks responded with a last-minute goal from sophomore Gracie Shoup with less than ten seconds remaining on the clock.
The teams entered halftime locked in a close 7-6 matchup.
The Terriers opened scoring again in the third quarter with senior Avery Jones finding the back of the net on a free position.
Some back-and-forth scoring in the third led to a hat trick for Amonte off an assist from Geddes to finish off the quarter. That tally marked Amonte’s 30th goal of the season.
Throughout the game, Geddes set a career high in assists, and Amonte became the first terrier to score 30 goals in a single season since 2023.
Terrier junior Jayne Feeney, who was injured in the loss against Navy, scored the first goal of the fourth quarter. However, the Mountain Hawks refused to give up, and scored three quick goals making the score 12-11 BU.
The Mountain Hawks went on another three-goal tear with just three minutes remaining in regulation and had the game tied at 14-14. Sophomore Shannon Nolan scored both the thirteenth and fourteenth goals for Lehigh and pushed the game into overtime.
Lehigh had a chance to finish off the game in the final minute, but BU’s goalie Natalie Aiosa shut down sophomore Molly Snow, the Mountain Hawk’s highest scorer during the game, on a free-position shot.
In overtime, both sides saw opportunities, but with less than 10 seconds left, it was ultimately Lehigh’s senior Angelina Pina who put one past the Terriers, ending the game 15-14.
BU outshot Lehigh 35-33 and outdrew them 20-13, but were not able to come out on top.
The next time the Terriers take the field, they will host Loyola Maryland on Saturday, April 12th, for Senior Day. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. at Nickerson Field.
