Providence, R.I. — The Boston University Softball Team (22-11) saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday after falling to Providence College (12-20) in a dramatic 3-2 loss.

Despite an early lead, the Terriers couldn’t fend off a late rally by the Friars, who stole the victory in the final inning.

The Terriers established the tone of the game early in the first inning with sophomore infielder Kylie Doherty starting the game with a double into left center, and sophomore infielder Libby Walsh followed with a strikeout.

Junior infielder Megan Coyle ensured the BU successfully used this opportunity, as she doubled into the left-field line to take home Doherty.

Providence went down in the bottom of the first with outfielder Elisa Smith, outfielder Gabriella Lee and catcher Emma Eichten, failing to reach base and leaving the game scoreless at 1-0.

BU could not extend their lead in the second inning, with sophomore outfielder Kyomi Apalit and junior infielder Brooke Deppiesse striking out.

Junior outfielder Aimee Metz and sophomore infielder Livia Christopher grounded out.

Providence also failed to get only one hit — a single by infielder Cameron Dunn, but no runs came from it.

The Terriers added a run to their lead in the third, with Doherty batting out to second and Deppiesse singling soon after. Deppiesse was soon able to reach home, widening the lead to 2-0.

Providence was unable to retaliate, as outfielders Kaelyn Loncharich and Gabriella Sebastian, along with infielder Rachael Petrarca, were retired in order in the third.

BU had a chance to extend their lead in the fourth but failed to capitalize.

Freshman outfielder Camryn Lyons walked and ended up third after a double from junior pinch hitter Olivia DeLong. However, a throw from right field caught Lyons at home.

Both sides struggled through the middle innings, as neither team added to the scoreboard.

BU’s offense stalled in the fifth and sixth innings, leaving runners stranded, while Providence managed just one hit during the same stretch.

Things took a turn in the bottom of the seventh, with the Friars cracking through the Terrier’s defense. Dunn singled with a leadoff, and infielder Hanna Aldrich walked.

A key error in left field allowed infielder Emma Douma to double, tying the game at 2-2. A RBI single by infielder Rachael Petrarca gave Providence the lead 3-2.

Providence pitcher Jessica Walter saved the day for the team with two shutout relief innings for BU.

Terrier junior pitcher Kasey Ricard took the loss for BU, despite a good start that saw her scattering only four hits in six innings.

Despite the loss, the Terriers historically have had a strong performance against Providence.

BU has held a 26-17-2 record against the team since their first matchup in 1988 with the Terriers last falling in March of 2021. The Terriers are currently 7-2-1 in their last 10 matchups against Providence.

BU will look to bounce back against Holy Cross for the Turnpike Trophy in a doubleheader Friday starting at 2 p.m.
