Softball: Terriers Sweep in Weekend Series Against Colgate
By Haydée Cepeda
BOSTON — The Boston University Softball Team (22-10) defeated Colgate University (10-22) in the final game of a weekend series Saturday.
The win came after BU swept the Raiders in a doubleheader Friday, marking the Terrier’s 10th win in a row.
“Confidence is high. Our offense has really come on,” BU Head Coach Ashley Waters said. “We hope that continues, but we just want to play better and better as the season goes.”
In the first inning, Colgate loaded the bases, with infielder Analisa Raffaelli hitting a double, utility player Jillian Herbst flying out to center field and catcher Quinn Livesay walking.
After catcher Lily Haluska hit a flyball that was caught to end the inning, BU was quick to take the lead.
Junior infielder Megan Coyle walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Sophomore infielder Libby Walsh also walked, and both Coyle and Walsh advanced to second and third on another wild pitch.
Senior utility player Sydney Pecoraro singled, allowing Coyle to score the first run of the game, before freshman catcher Addie Lucier grounded to second base, ending the inning.
The Raiders’ second inning mirrored their first, as infielders Mia Cascio and Alexis Romero both struck out.
Though infielder Amanda DeSantis managed to draw a walk, outfielder Mackenzie Lewis popped up to second base, marking the third out.
Despite a short second inning, the Terriers were quick to get another run.
With only one out, junior outfielder Aimee Metz scored after a single from sophomore outfielder Kylie Doherty. BU got two outs shortly after.
Colgate struggled to catch up in the third inning, getting three hits and three outs right away.
The Terriers, however, were able to capitalize, with freshman infielder Kieren McHugh and Lucier both scoring runs.
BU entered the fourth inning four runs ahead, but they were unable to build on their lead.
“We always have things to work on,” Waters said. “We just try to dig deep and focus on ourselves and focus on our own game and do what we need to do to win.”
Entering the fifth inning with the Raiders still behind, the Terriers were able to get three more runs under their belt.
With Lucier and McHugh on second and third bases, sophomore infielder Kyomi Apalit hit a double, allowing McHugh to get a run and Lucier to advance to third.
Infielder and catcher Livia Christopher was quick to build on this momentum, hitting a single to left field, scoring both Lucier and Apalit.
Colgate’s first run came in the sixth inning when Raffaelli scored on a double from Haluska.
With the bases loaded, the Raiders had a promising opportunity, but their momentum stalled as Romero struck out and DeSantis followed with a flyout, ending the inning.
The Terriers did not extend their lead in the sixth inning, with two fly balls and a strike-out.
The seventh inning took a turn from the rest of the game, with Colgate scoring four runs.
“I think for [the team], it’s just a matter of continuing to play the game all the way through and not giving up so many runs,” Waters said.
After starting with two strike-outs, Rafaelli and Herbst scored two unearned runs. Haluska walked, allowing Livesay to advance to second base.
Cascio was next up to the plate, and her hit allowed for pitcher Mia Edwards and Livesay to score.
Only two runs behind, Colgate tried hard to catch up to the Terriers, but a flyball from Romero ended the game with a win for BU and a score of 7-5.
The Terriers will return to the diamond April 2 to face the Providence College Friars. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Providence.
