Women’s Lacrosse: BU Wins Back-to Back, Starts Season 6-3

By Hannah Connors

The Boston University Women’s Lacrosse (6-3, 1-1 PL) maintain a winning record following their 10-8 victory over Bucknell (4-4, 0-1 PL).

BU’s season started off slow with a 21-6 loss against the reigning National Champs, Boston College. The Terriers’ young defense struggled against the Eagles’ veteran offense.

“We gave up a lot of 8-meters in the first half,” coach Lauren Morton said in the post-game interview. “This gave them some easy looks at the cage.”

This lack of defensive control was reflected in the shot differential, with BU tallying 10 shots on goal compared to BC’s 33.

The Terriers took Morton’s defensive advice to heart, rebounding in their second game of the season with a 7-4 victory over Sacred Heart. BU showcased stronger defensive play, dominating ground balls with a total of 23 in this match-up.

Izzy Amonte was the driving force behind BU’s offense. When the Terriers entered the second half down 3-1, Amonte answered, scoring a free position shot just 30 seconds into the third quarter. One goal was not enough for her, as just two minutes later, Amonte netted her second goal of the game, tying it for the Terriers.

Following this, the Terriers maintained steady control over Sacred Heart, scoring four additional goals while conceding only one.

BU built off this momentum to pilot a 14-6 win over Stonehill.

Last season, BU just barely scraped away from Stonehill with a 16-15 win, but this season, the game was a different narrative.

Eight different Terriers contributed to the score, including hat-tricks from Hannah Tiller, Elle Stevenson, and Amonte.

“I was really proud of everyone being a threat in this game,” Morton said.

Unfortunately, this winning drive for the Terriers fell with a 13-9 loss against the Fairfield Stags.

BU struggled with discipline, recording 24 turnovers, and despite a half-time lead, could not pull through.

In the final quarter, the Stags completely dominated as BU’s lack of discipline got the best of them. Boston University recorded two green cards, four turnovers, and seven fouls in this period alone, allowing Fairfield to seize control of the game.

In their next game against Iona, the Terriers secured a dominant 14-5 victory.

Eight different Terriers record goals, including four from sophomore midfielder Tesse Geddes.

Geddes has proven to be a strong two-way player for BU, having scored at least one goal in every game and recording 13 ground balls this season.

Boston University again used this dominant momentum to achieve a 17-6 win against Merrimack College Warriors.

The Terriers exhibited strong shot opportunities, specifically in their eight meters, and only 13 turnovers limiting Merrimack’s opportunities offensively.

BU’s showed their two-way depth this game, with 8 different players recording goals, and 10 different players recording ground balls.

“Across the board having anyone who can step up on any given day is really special,” Morton said.

This set the Terriers with a 4-2 record heading into their first game of Patriot League play against Army.

Geddes opened the game with a goal off a free position for the Terriers, scoring just 1:04 into the game.

The Black Knights tied it with 9:39 left in the first before junior Elle Stevenson potted her first goal of the game, finishing off a transition opportunity. Army responded quickly tying the game 2-2 to close out the first.

After this, Army broke out into the second scoring three straight goals. While BU players like Amonte attempted to cut into the score deficit, it was not enough for the Terriers to regain control.

Army outdrew BU 21-8 and outshot the Terriers 27-14. Only three Terriers—Amonte, Geddes, and Stevenson—managed to score, highlighting Army’s effective shutdown of BU’s offense.

BU was able to bounce back against the University of New Hampshire Wild Cats 14-8.

The Terriers found themselves down 2-0 to the Wildcats in the first quarter but used four unanswered goals to take the lead. They then held the lead for the remainder of the game.

In net, sophomore Natalie Aiosa made 15 saves, marking a new career high by three saves. Aoisa finished the game with a .652 save percentage.

Junior Siri Hodgins caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls to lead the defense. In addition, Hodgin recorded her fourth career hat trick and her second against UNH.

This gave the Terriers momentum moving into their second game of Patriot League play against the Bucknell University Bisons.

The first three-quarters of the game were relatively back and forth between Bucknell and BU.

Trailing 6-5 with under five minutes left in the third quarter, the Terriers pulled off five straight goals, allowing them to hold the lead the rest of the game.

The Terriers held off all free-position goals on the defensive end, preventing the Bison from generating offensively.

Moving into more Patriot League play for the second half of the season, the Terriers will take on Lafayette on Saturday, March 22 at 12 p.m. in Easton Pennsylvania. Streaming will be available on ESPN+.
