No. 9/8 Boston University Men’s Ice Hockey (17-11-1, 11-7-1 HE) is set for a home-and-home series against the Northeastern University Huskies (10-15-3, 5-10-3 HE).
“I think our D zone has been much better,” Coach Jay Pandolfo said. “Overall, I like where our team defense has been in the second half.”
The Terriers will host Northeastern on Friday at Agganis Arena at 7 p.m. and then travel across town to Matthews Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Before Friday’s puck drop, the voice of the Terriers, Bernie Corbett, will be honored for his 40th season with the organization.
BU is coming off a split weekend series against Providence, bouncing back from a 6-3 loss to shut out the Friars 3-0 at home the next day.
Freshman goaltender Mikhail Yegorov was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week after earning his first NCAA shutout, boasting a .947 save percentage in three games against top-10 teams.
Sascha Boumedienne has also emerged as a key contributor to the Terriers’ strong defense, recently scoring his first career goal.
“College is hard, no matter how old you are, especially for a defenseman, especially in this league, coming in as a 17 year old… and he’s handled it very well,” Pandolfo said regarding Boumedienne, who is the youngest player in the NCAA. “He continues to get better.”
Boumedienne earned a two-point night, assisting on Quinn Hutson’s 50th career goal and his 100th career point. Q. Hutson leads the Terriers in goals and points this season (17 G, 36 P).
BU holds a 171-69-12 all-time record against Northeastern. This rivalry has increased in its competitiveness, with the last 10 matchups recording 4-5-1. The last four games resulted in one goal difference, with each contest finishing in a 4-3 final score.
The last time the teams faced off was on March 16, with the Terriers winning 4-2 in the Hockey East Quarterfinals.
The Huskies have lost five of their last six games, with their latest win coming in a 2-0 victory last Friday.
