Boston University Women’s Basketball (7-12, 2-7 PL) prepare to host the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (7-13, 1-8 PL) in an exciting conference game on Saturday, Feb. 1. With the two teams having similar season and conference records, this match could be a close call as they look to make a statement in the latter half of their seasons.
Boston University enters this matchup looking to build on their positive momentum, coming off a close 52-49 win over Holy Cross that broke the terriers’ former losing streak. BU continues to lead with the success of senior guard Alex Giannaros. She has been the driving force on offense, and her ability to score from the three point line will be necessary to set the tone offensively in this contest.
Defensively, Allison Schwertner and Bella McLaughlin have played key roles in the backcourt, with Schwertner leading the team in 4.6 rebounds per game and McLaughlin contributing as a secondary ball handler. However, averaging 17.7 turnovers a game–a theme during their season thus far–the Terriers need to keep possession of this fame to relieve pressure from their defense.
Loyola Maryland comes into this matchup with a similar record of 7-13, and a 1-8 mark in conference play. The Greyhounds are coming off a close 49-54 loss to Bucknell on January 29, 2025, so they approach this game with a desire for a much-needed victory.
Kimmie Hicks, the Greyhounds’ leading scorer with 14.6 points per game, has been a standout player for Loyola this season. She will need to continue her offensive efficiency and use her ability to get to the free-throw line for Loyola to take control of this game. Her shooting beyond the arc will put her in competition with Giannaros, which is a matchup to look out for.
Loyola’s second-leading scorer, Laura Salmerón, has also been important to Loyola’s offense, though her shooting has been inconsistent at times. In addition, Koi Sims contributes strongly on the defensive end with her solid statistic of 11 rebounds per game. Loyola will need to find consistency from the three point line to break down BU’s defense and create opportunities in the paint.
The Boston Terriers’ matchup against Loyola Maryland will take place at Case Gym and it will be streamed live on ESPN+. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
