Boston University Women’s Basketball Team (7-12, 1-7 PL) fell to the Bucknell Bison (10-9, 5-3 PL) 74-59 in a Saturday afternoon matchup.
The Terriers entered the contest dropping six of the past seven games, and hoped to regain some of that spark that helped take them to the Patriots League championship. The Terriers sole win in that run, was against the lowly American University who have yet to win a game this year, losing their first 19 in a row.
Despite that being the Terriers sole league win this season, they are only a few games away from breaking into the top six of the standings and avoiding the first round of the Patriot’s League tournament.
The Terriers would begin the game strongly with Alex Giannaros sinking a three for the first points of the game, a game in which she inched closer to passing Maggie Pina’s record of the fourth most made three-pointers in Terrier history, leaving her only one back.
This would sadly be the Terriers largest lead of the game, meaning after sequential buckets from Ashley Sofilkanich and Allison Schwertener, the 5-2 Terrier lead would be the last lead they held the entire game as they would go on to lose 74-59.
When asked about her team’s performance, Head Coach Melissa Graves said, “I was happy with the offensive side of the ball for the most part, except for the first quarter. You know, we were kind of making some silly mistakes offensively, we were kinda turning the ball over. After that I thought we really locked in, we shot the ball at a really high clip for the rest of the game.”
This was evident as the Terriers would outscore the Bison between the second quarter all the way until the final minute of regulation, cutting the lead to within six points on multiple occasions. However because of the Terrier’s slow start and Bison’s early rise the first quarter would determine the game, and the 11 point advantage from it would reign supreme.
Sofilkanich would follow up her monstrous 44 point 11 rebound five assist performance that would see her tie the Bucknell single game points record, with a game high 22 points seven rebounds and six assists. The Bucknell sophomore currently leads the Patriots League in scoring averaging over 20 points per game and is second in rebounds.
Anete Adler would help the Terriers remain competitive throughout the fixture pouring in a team and career high 15 points off the bench for BU.
The Terriers return home for a pair of games, which sees them taking on conference co-leaders Holy Cross at Case Gym at 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
