After a disappointing Beanpot shutout, the Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey team (15-8-1, 12-4-1 HE) bounced back and recorded a shutout of their own against the Holy Cross Crusaders (7-14-3, 3-12-3 HE).
“We are still trying to find our consistency,” Coach Megan Myers said. “I mean you can see with the past Beanpot and the past games we’ve had…but all lines were rolling tonight and I think we found a lot of that.”
The 2-0 victory was sophomore goaltender Mari Pieterson’s fifth start of the year and her first career shutout.
Things started with a bang in Worcester, with forward Alex Law scoring her first goal of the season just under five minutes into the game.
Law, who had tied her season high for shots on goal with seven in Tuesday’s Beanpot game, finally found the back of the net by beating Crusader goalie Abby Hornung’s blocker side.
Following her goal, the sophomore became the 14th Terrier to score this season.
“She can possess the puck better than anybody,” Myers said. “She’s one of the fastest players in college hockey… I’m glad she got the monkey off her back and hopefully there is more to come.”
Defender Julia Shaunessy tallied an assist on Law’s goal to increase her team-leading point total to 15.
At the beginning of the second, forward Riley Walsh had a prime scoring opportunity, but Hornung flashed the leather and made a highlight reel save.
It was forward Lola Reid who cashed in with two minutes left in the period. The freshman scored her first goal since November 1, 2024, on a spin-around backhanded shot from the slot.
While Holy Cross had a handful of good opportunities in the second half of the period, they struggled to connect on plays, allowing the Terriers to head into the third period leading 2-0.
Still down by two goals, the Crusaders elected to pull Hornung with a little over three minutes remaining in the game. With some divine timing from the hockey gods, Holy Cross drew a cross-checking penalty on BU defender Keira Healey to get a six-on-four opportunity for the last 1:46.
But thanks to their nationally third-ranked penalty kill, the Terriers killed off the man advantage in textbook fashion to secure the win.
Even though the Crusaders had five more shots on goal and won 61.5% of faceoffs, they struggled to maintain possession of the puck, allowing the Terriers to add another 0.5 points to the Turnpike Trophy count.
The two programs will meet again tomorrow at 4 p.m. for the grand reopening of Walter Brown Arena.
