Women’s Hockey: No. 14 Terriers shut out 2-0 in New Hampshire
By Abigail Stocker
It was a game of missed opportunities for the 14th-ranked Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey Team (14-6-1, 11-3-1 HE) as they fell 2-0 to the University of New Hampshire Wildcats (11-11-1, 7-9-0 HE) on Saturday afternoon.
“Not good enough,” coach Tara Watchorn said. “Wasn’t our brand of hockey and we just couldn’t self correct quick enough the weekend between the Beanpot games.”
The first period opened up with a goal from Shea Verrier, who shoved the puck in on the backhand, digging through BU netminder Callie Shanahan to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Although giving up the early goal, the Terriers continued a strong offensive push, throwing 10 shots at UNH goaltender Sedona Blair.
“They have a good goalie in net, and, you know, once they got one on us, I think we just started hesitating,” Watchorn said.
The Wildcats kept the pressure up in the Terriers’ zone, keeping Shanahan pinned throughout the opening period.
The second frame saw UNH with two man-advantages that were successfully killed off by BU. However, the second power play for the Wildcats carried on into the final period.
Sara Boucher found the puck and pushed it past Shanahan just two seconds after the conclusion of the UNH power-play, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Shanahan was pulled for the extra attacker as a last-ditch effort to get themselves back into the game, but they were unsuccessful.
Reflecting on the game’s total shutout, coach Watchorn found that the team was lacking their typical flow of offense and defensive communication.
“There was a lot of hesitation and not a lot of communication,” Watchorn said.
This is the first time the Terriers’ have been shut out since Oct. 11.
Following this loss, BU will regroup and head to TD Garden on Tuesday, Jan 21, for the Dunkin’ Beanpot Championship against Northeastern University. The title game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, with streaming available on ESPN+.
