Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey (8-3-0, 6-1-0 HEA) won their weekend sweep with a 3-2 result against the Providence College Friars (5-5-0, 2-4-0 HEA) at Schneider Arena.
“We got to generate a little bit more momentum, and we’re rewarded for it,” said Coach Tara Watchorn.
The Terriers had a perfect six-point weekend in Hockey East conference play, earning their seventh straight win.
This win allowed BU to break records as it was the first time since the 2013–14 season that the Terriers have won seven consecutive games.
Clara Yuhn opened up the scoring in the first, scoring a power play goal against Providence early in the first period.
Capitalizing on the numerous power play opportunities, Audre Nap took advantage of the man advantage, scoring her fifth goal of the season during the opening minutes of the second period, beating BU goaltender Callie Shanahan to even out the score 1-1.
Late in the second frame, the Terriers regained the advantage as Luisa Welcke scored her first goal of the season off a rebound shot from former Friar Lindsay Bochna, allowing the Terriers to take a 2-1 lead with one period remaining.
“It felt really good and I’m just excited for the next games,” Welcke said regarding getting herself on the scoreboard for the first time this season.
The teams began the third period with ties in both shots on goal and blocks.
With two minutes remaining in the third period, Providence pulled their goalie for one final push to tie the game up.
Luisa Welcke took advantage of the empty net, scoring her second goal of the game and the season.
The Friars did not let the goal affect their spirits as Dylan Berman netted her first collegiate goal, poking the puck past Shanahan with just 29 seconds remaining in the game.
Providence elicited one final push to defeat the Terriers, pulling their goalie one last time. Despite their efforts, BU maintained a strong defense, closing out the game with a 3-2 win.
“[The Friars are] very well coached, and they played their game plan,” Watchorn said. “They probably made it hard, the hardest on us so far in our D zone… It was definitely a good challenge. I think we’ll be able to grow from this weekend.”
Shanahan recorded 21 saves to earn her sixth victory of the year.
“It’s all in our control, so I think if we stick to the details and just keep playing how we’re playing we’ll have a pretty good season,” Welcke said.
BU will look to continue their seven-game win streak on Nov. 7 against Merrimack College at Merrimack. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m., with streaming available on ESPN+.
