Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey (5-3-0, 4-1-0 HEA) completed a weekend sweep against Syracuse University (2-6-0, 0-0-0 AHA) in a 3-2 victory at the Tennity Ice Pavilion on Saturday.
Despite consistent offensive opportunities for both the Orange and the Terriers, neither team was able to net any shots during the opening minutes in the first frame.
A chance arose for Syracuse about halfway through the first period when the Orange gained a power play after an interference call against BU.
With multiple incredible saves by goaltender Mari Pietersen, the Terriers successfully killed the penalty, leaving the rest of the period scoreless.
BU’s continued sustained offensive pressure proved to be beneficial for the Terriers in the second.
Early into the middle frame, Syracuse defender Charlotte Hallett was helped off the ice after a trip from Maeve Carry. Hallett’s absence became a struggle for the Orange, as the Terriers ended the second period with a significant shot-on-goal disparity, where BU had 24 shots compared to Syracuse’s 11.
Although there was consistent offensive pressure from the Terriers, goaltender Allie Kelley performed well and was the difference-maker for the Orange.
Toward the end of the period, a penalty called on Charli Kettyle gave BU their first powerplay opportunity.
Just 10 seconds into the man advantage, a shot from the top left circle from Sydney Healey broke the deadlock, giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead with four minutes left in the period.
However, this lead was short-lived.
With 20 seconds left in the period, former Terrier Jackson Kinsler tied up the game for Syracuse with a shot netted in the top right corner.
Both teams entered the third period eager to create more offensive opportunities, but only BU found success.
With a significant shot-on-goal advantage, it was inevitable for the Terriers to regain the lead.
Riley Walsh did just that. A shot trickled in off the right post four minutes into the final period, marking Walsh’s third goal and fifth point of the season for a 2-1 Terrier lead.
Continued weak defensive pressure from the Orange gave BU more opportunities.
After a two-on-one breakaway for the Terriers, Lola Reid scored the third goal of the night.
“Lola Reid is producing for us quite well.” Assistant Coach Megan Myers said in a post-game interview.
Reid continues to be the lead scorer for the Terriers, with 11 points so far this season and six goals.
Syracuse managed to generate one more goal with five minutes left in the period, as defender Maya D’Arcy scored following a pass from the slot.
The game’s last five minutes saw rep after rep from the top two Syracuse lines, but they could not find an equalizer against the Terriers.
BU maintained a relaxed, calm offense throughout the game, sticking to their strategy regardless of who was on the ice for Syracuse, ultimately leading to their victory.
“I’m happy with the win,” Myers said. “Every game we are becoming more mature in the way we handle close games like this.”
The Terriers will look to continue their five-game win streak on Nov. 1 against Providence College for another back-to-back weekend series. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. at Agganis Arena, with streaming available on ESPN+.
