The Boston University Terriers (4-3-0, 4-1-0 HEA) completed the weekend sweep against the University of Maine Black Bears (1-5-0, 1-3-0 HEA) in a 2-0 shutout win on Saturday.

“I am really proud of our team’s composure and how present we were throughout both games,” Coach Tara Watchorn said. “[Also] how we were paying attention to our standard and our habits.”

After consistent offensive pressure in the opening frame, Sydney Healey was rewarded with her second goal of the season, beating Maine’s freshman netminder Kiia Lahtinen.

Healey’s goal was assisted by linemates Alex Law and the leading scorer for the Terriers, Lola Reid.

“Honestly… it’s been fun. I think it’s really nice that almost after every shift we come off [the ice] and talk and kind of figure out what’s working and what isn’t,” Healey said about Law and Reid. “It’s been really good to play with them, they’re both really smart and effective players.”

BU continued to apply sustained pressure throughout the rest of the first.

The second period tilted in the Black Bears’ favor, adding 12 shots to the Terriers’ five, but they could not beat goaltender Callie Shanahan, who recorded her second shutout of the season in the victory.

A penalty parade marked the start of the third, with both teams unable to capitalize on the man advantage.

With the clock running out, Maine was eagerly searching for the equalizer.

However, a tripping call put a stint in the Black Bears’ momentum.

Captain Tamara Giaquinto capitalized on the power play, beating Lahtinen off a bouncing puck that ricocheted off the board by Reid, who earned her second assist of the game.

In a last-ditch effort, Maine pulled their goalkeeper, but BU remained solid defensively, securing the weekend sweep.

“I think it just instills some more confidence, elevating our expectations for ourselves,” Watchorn said. “I think every weekend we’re proving to ourselves and each other that we’re a good hockey team and if we stick to what we do well, then we should come out on top.”

The Terriers will look to capitalize on another weekend series matchup against the Syracuse Orange next weekend. The first contest is set for Oct. 25 with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
