Women’s Soccer: Terriers fall 3-0 in a disappointing performance at Yale
By Finley Rogan
Boston University Women’s Soccer (2-6-4, 2-0-1 PL) lost 3-0 to the Yale Bulldogs (7-3, 0-1-0 IVY) Tuesday night in New Haven.
“I think we are trying to have a little bit of a short-term memory with tonight,” BU head coach Casey Brown said.
Both squads entered the game on a winning streak, the Terriers with two wins in a row and the Bulldogs with three.
The Terriers looked good early with two shots in the first 10 minutes of the match. Aside from the early looks, BU struggled to find an offensive rhythm for the rest of the half.
Yale had an excellent opportunity to take the lead in the 29th minute on a screaming volley attempt however the chance hit the post and bounced out.
The game was knotted up 0-0 at the break. Yale held a five-shot advantage, however, each side only had one shot on target. 20 different Terriers saw the pitch in the first half.
BU opened the second half with a disallowed goal in the 48th minute after the officials ruled it offside.
Each side began the second half with intent, but neither could connect on the final pass and the game remained deadlocked entering the final 30 minutes.
Yale consistently played through the wings, crossing the ball every chance they could. This forced BU freshman goalie Bridget Carr to continue to come out of goal and contest the crosses, which she did effectively throughout the night.
In the 69th minute, Yale took a lead after their 11th corner kick of the night. The ball deflected down off the cross, where senior defender Nana Yang was there to find it and tuck it into the bottom corner. The goal was a real blow to the Terriers, who had gallantly defended for most of the second half.
Yale daggered the game home on another corner kick in the 80th minute. Junior forward Abigail Solomon headed the ball into the back of the net to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0.
“They were especially potent with their corners,” Brown said. “That’s how they scored three of their past four goals coming into this game.”
Three minutes later Yale scored again as senior midfielder Tina Teik converted an easy chance in the box to extend the lead to three. The 3-0 scoreline would continue until full-time.
The good news for the Terriers is that since this was an out-of-conference game, it will not worsen BU’s second-place standing in the Patriot League table.
“We’re not letting this slow our role in terms of conference play,” Brown said.
BU will begin a huge stretch in the Patriot League, beginning at Nickerson Field against Navy this Saturday at 1 p.m.
