The Boston University Terriers (6-10, 1-2 PL) beat the American University Eagles (8-8, 2-1 PL), 72-68, at Case Gym on Wednesday night. BU’s veterans led the way to the Terriers’ first conference win.
Senior guard Miles Brewster scored a career-high 21 points to go along with two rebounds and three assists. “He’s been better and better, he’s playing like a veteran player,” said BU head coach Joe Jones. “You need guys that can go out there and score 20 points.”
Brewster’s effort was the first 20+ point performance for BU this season. He has scored in double figures in his last five games.
The Terriers got contributions from their whole team; nine out of the ten players that saw the floor scored, and freshman forward Matai Baptiste had seven rebounds and an assist to offset his scoreless night. “Our guys played really hard,” said Jones. “We tried to extend our bench tonight and play more guys.”
BU’s second-leading scorer was freshman guard Spencer Joyner, who came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Joyner didn’t see the floor in BU’s first two conference games, but played 18 minutes on Wednesday and delivered a highlight-reel dunk.
“He’s one of the guys on the team that hasn’t had the chance to show what they can do, and that can be tough as a freshman,” said Jones.
BU started strong with a Miles Brewster dunk to score the first points of the game. An Ethan Okwuosa layup two minutes later gave BU a 4-0 lead, which held until American’s Elijah Stevens hit a 3-pointer five minutes into the first half to score the first points for the Eagles.
The game continued back and forth through the first half, and both teams went into the break tied at 26. American’s Elijah Stevens scored two 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the second half, putting the Eagles up 35-28 at the 18-minute mark.
American held the lead for most of the second half, until senior BU forward Anthony Morales hit a 3-pointer with 7:51 left in the half to give BU a 55-52 lead. Morales laced another 3-pointer a minute later, and the Terriers kept their lead for the rest of the game.
The Eagles brought it within one point after freshman forward Greg Jones hit a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left, but BU’s Miles Brewster and Ethan Okwuousa both hit their free throws to hold onto the lead.
The Terriers won the conference match 72-68, and will next head to Baltimore to take on Loyola Maryland at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
