Women’s Basketball: Terriers Stomp Colgate for Fifth Straight Win
By James Noyes
Boston University Women’s Basketball (10-6, 5-0 PL) defeated the Colgate University Raiders (9-7, 3-2 PL) 72-51 at Case Gym on Wednesday. Despite the absence of star forward Caitlin Weimar, the Terriers took control on their home court to extend their winning streak to five games.
Without Weimar on the floor, senior forward Maren Durant stepped up for BU. She contributed a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, as well as five assists, two blocks and two steals.
“Maren played great on both sides of the ball,” BU Head Coach Melissa Graves said. “For her to have five assists as well, she’s passing the ball out of double teams and finding shooters, which is helping our 3-point field goal percentage.”
The Terriers dominated from outside of the arc. Heading into the game, BU was ranked third in the country in 3-point field goal percentage, and their hot shooting was on display again against Colgate. The Terriers shot 11-for-21 from three, 52.4%, moving them to number one in the country in 3-point percentage.
Senior guard Maggie Pina shot 4-for-6 from deep to notch 12 points, and the Terrier bench combined for 19 points to sustain the blowout. Colgate was led by their freshman guard Madison Schiller, who put up 15 points and six rebounds on perfect 8-for-8 shooting in the loss.
The Terriers played one of their cleanest games of the season so far, limiting turnovers to a season-low of eight.
“We did some extra film sessions of what their press looked like, and how we wanted to break it,” Graves said. “We made some adjustments that gave them a little more confidence.”
After a strong first quarter, BU took the lead and never gave it back. Graves said that confidence and humility are some of the team’s strengths.
“When the preseason poll came out and we were number one, we talked about how there’s still a lot of work to do, and not to take any team for granted,” Graves said. “Taking it one game at a time and understanding that every opponent matters.”
The Terriers have certainly been living in the moment and playing harmonious basketball over the last few weeks. They will look to continue the trend and extend their winning streak to six games against Army at 3 p.m. on Sunday in West Point, New York.
