Women’s Basketball: Terriers blowout New Hampshire 78-42
By Brendan Galvin
Boston University Women’s Basketball (4-2) was victorious in their blowout 78-42 win over the University of New Hampshire (2-5) on Sunday afternoon.
In what was Game 1 of a three-game road trip, the Terriers jumped out to an early lead, leading 20-11 after the first quarter.
The team was led by the senior tandem of guards Maggie Pina and Sydney Johnson. Pina scored 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting, and had four rebounds and four assists. Johnson totaled 12 points, and put up three boards and five assists.
Senior forward Maren Durant was also a strong defensive presence for BU, finishing with seven points, eight rebounds and four assists as well as three blocks.
However, the deciding factor was the shooting success of BU, and the cold day for UNH. The Terriers shot exactly 50% from the field and from 3-point range, going 28-for-56 and 7-for-14, respectively. UNH shot a combined 15-for-60 (25%) from the field, and only connected on one of their 16 (6.3%) attempts from deep.
For the Wildcats, freshman guard Breezie Williams led the offensive attack, contributing 12 points and hauling in four rebounds. Senior guard Brooke Kane also scored six points, brought in four rebounds and dished out three assists.
In a game that BU led for the entire 40 minutes — minus 32 seconds — the game seemed in hand early for the Terriers. The dagger seemed to come late in the second quarter, when junior guard Kelsi Mingo converted on an and-one, giving the Terriers a 22-point lead.
The team would go into halftime with a dominant 24-point lead, ahead 42-18.
11 of the 12 members of the team were able to get minutes, with 10 different players contributing on the scoreboard.
The commanding win was the fourth consecutive for the Terriers, while the loss marked the third straight for UNH, who continue their slow start to the 2022-2023 campaign.
BU looks to continue their hot start to the season at Saint Joseph’s University on Thursday, before traveling to play their cross-town rival Boston College on Sunday. The Terriers next play at home on Dec. 7 against Merrimack.
